Just wondering if I should get the H1N1 flu shot in between monthly chemo treatments until I get into the clinicial trial...is it safe for cancer patients to take this and the seasonal flu shots??

Hi Lynn, My husband Bob (stage 3 esoph. Cancer) was given a flu shot a week before his first 1-week infushion of chemo. The H1N1 was not avail.then, or he would have it as well. He begins another wk of chemo on Monday and will now have to wait. He was told that it should be given a wk or so before or after. Certainly you will want to advised by your MD.
Best wishes to you,Nan
I was told that it was ok to have a h1n1 shot at any time during my Chemo treatments. But I cannot even get the regular flu shot or the h1n1 shot ,not available in our town.
no test or studies have been done on Cancer/chemo and and H1N1 flu shot. They do not even know the long term side effects of this vaccine because hasn't been out long enough to study. When this vaccine first came out in the early 70's were lots of deaths and health issues but this is suppose to be different from that one.
There are several on the CML (leukemia page that are not taking it) but then again some that are.
One CML patient - her oncologist recommended for her to wait and see what other cml patients side effects were before she took one.
I personally will keep my germicide close by and be careful when out in public, and wash my hands upon entering the house.
But will not have a flu shot of any kind.
I am scheduled to get the h1n1 next week and my 2 kids also, the only thing I was told, don't get the live virus nasal spray kind! Get the shot only. I also had the regular flu shot a few weeks ago and I am obsessive about all of us washing and sanitizing our hands, I have a sign on my door that says if you are sick, please call me before visiting!
Definitely consult with you group of doctors about it and what type you might consider if any at all, I am only getting it due to the fact that I have school age kids and it is running around both their schools.
For what it is worth. I am treated with Vidaza on a 3 week off and 1 week on cycle for MDS. I received a standard flu shot 10 days before my last treatment. Ten days after completing my series, my Hgb and Hct both dropped dramatically - to a level I have not seen for months and months. The only thing different was the shot. It required me to receive 3 shots (40,000 units) of procrit to help bring my numbers up before I begin my next series the first week of Nov. Did that affect my numbers AND my general daily feelings? I say that was it. They say no! If I am still around when flu shots are given next year, I may rethink it.
My oncologist recommended I take the flu shot one week before my first chemo.(R-CHOP) He recommended the pneumonia shot one week before my second chemo. He also wanted me to take the H1N1 before my 3rd chemo.I had no side effects and will have my 4th chemo next week. Talk with your doctor and ask him about your concerns vs risks of not taking it.
Yes he said to take it one week after I finish my chemo..so next week I am looking for it!
I got it both. You NEED to get this its very important. Im on my last round for cancer and I got it 3 weeks ago. Im VERY glad I did.
