Anxiety

Hi. I'm crawling out of my skin with anxiety and worry. My mother was diagnosed with stage IV NSCLC about a week ago. Today she has her first appointment with an oncologist. She lives hundreds of miles away from me and I am just having a hard time waiting and working at my job, etc. I will see her soon but I can't wait to find out what--if any--treatment is recommended. She has mets to her spine in 9 places which sounds horribly scary to me.

Hi, I know what you are going through. I too have been going out of my mind with worry and anxiety. My father ( 65yr) was diagnosed with stage IA Nsclc in Jan of 2009. It now has been restaged twice since his removal of his right upper lobe in Mar.2009. There was a lymph node involved. Then they said his medistinum waas involved. He started treatments a week and half ago.Chemo/ radiation-(cisplatin/etoposide days 1-8,29-36; with radiation everyday for 28 days mon-fri) All his tests have been inconclusive as to where the Invasive poorly differentiated adenocarcinma cancer has spreaded. The oncologist says it is now stage III or IV. We have seen so many doctors and have been through CT, Pet/CT, muga scan, kidny ultrasounds, urologists, pulmonolgists, oncologists, radiation oncologists and so on. How did your mom make out at the oncologist? It is an absolute gut wrenching experience and I am sorry for what you are dealing with. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your mom. Try to stay strong and talk about your fears and hopes because quitting is not an option:) Remeber you are not alone.

Thank you so much for your reply. My mom was put on tarceva and a 10-day course of radiation to an area of her spine. She is experiencing life-altering nausea and isn't sure if she can take it. She has an anti-nausea drug, zofran, which only helps her a bit. She also is taking oxy contin for pain, and it turns out that oxy contin can induce nausea.
Keep me posted about your dad. What a crazy thing to keep being told it is a different stage.
You are not alone either:)
