Arthritis from Cancer

0 Recommendations

I have been battling cancer since 9/07. I have stage IV lung cancer and had a lung removed, chemo, radiation and a tumor removed from the lower left area of my brain. Recently, after a PET scan two more Mets showed up. One on my T3 vertebrae and one on my liver. What has also just started occurring has been intense stiffness in every joint in my body! Some days worse then others. I actually had two days this week where it was almost non existent. My doc and I are both fairly sure that its osteoarthritis, but why do I have it? Why was it gone for a couple of days? How do I get rid of it? My doc isn't being much help with it. She is pretty much at the "lets just make you comfortable" stage and Im still fighting....

Hi Rock,
I'm 5 months (NED) from Non Hodgkins Lymphoma and back in April I started with joint pain and swelling along with neuropathy. Apparantly the high doses of steroids can cause the problem of osteoarthritis. Some of the chemo drugs can cause the neuropathy too. The only thing that has been done is celebrex for the problem which helps a little. It was suggested that I take water aerobics too. Getting moving helps some but just to get moving is a chore. I hope they can do something to help you with this problem. If you are like me, I hate "adding" another pill. We do what we have to do though. Prayers are with you and your family. Keep up the fight!

Thank you Joy!! That was certainly helpful and , yes, I am like you....I hate pills!! I was just talking with my ex wife recently about coming up there to use her pool for low impact water workouts! Funny you should mention water aerobics! You stay strong too!!

God Rocky, you don't need any more issues....Have no idea except that some forms are an auto-immune disorder..that might explain it...I have osteo and some days I could almost run and other days I can hardly move....there seems to be no explanation. I do know that some of my symptoms are affected by the barometric pressure.

Tell you Doc you are in fighting mode and not "lets make you comfortable mode!" I have been thinking of you. Please take care of yourself and family!

You are "so" in my thoughts!!!!!!

Thank you darlin! I have to pay more attention to the weather, I suppose. I also upped my monavie consumption which seems to be helping! I am going to Johns Hopkins on the 3rd and I am hoping that I get better advice then ways to be comfortable!! Thats a joke!! She doesn't know me very well! hahaha! So where are you in your treatment at the moment?? I'll be talking to you!

Hi Rock,
I to was diagnosed with IV stage lung cancer ,with left lung removed ,and numerous other surgeries. That was two years ago,at the young age of 41. Shortly after chemo was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the hips, rheumatoid arthritis in my feet, hands, shoulders, and neck. I found it interesting that you to were having similiar health issues. What type of cancer were you diagnosed with? The type I have is a large cell neuroendocrine lung cancer, which is uncommon i have been told. Just curious if there is a connection.
For my arthritis i do see a rheumatologist who is treating me for it, which has stopped the progression of it. I am much more comfortable and able to get around much better. Maybe your oncologist will refer you to at least consult with one. Mine did and i am so glad that i went to that appt.

I will ask her about sending me to one. Right now, Im just taking 400mgs of Advil 3xs/day. Seems to be working, i still have issues, but its better then it was. I was diagnosed with NSCLC, left lung removed, 6 treatments of cisplatin/taxotere, radiation of thre brain, tumor removed from left cerebellar hemisphere after radiation didnt take. Going through 2 1/2 weeks of daily whole brain rad now for new spot on front of my brain. When Im done with this, its back to chemo for new mets on spine and liver.....ugghhhh!

I'm almost certain (contradicitonin terms?) I know what this is--I have gout (had it 15 yrs., was too young, not heavy enough, and female--to get it--but, I did). My dr. told me he had "never seen uric acid levels so high, except in someone with cancers who had had chemo" or something. I may be "onto nothing" ( i have a habit of that these days), but have you had your uric acid levels checked? I had alot of med. treament (too confusing to go into) and thought i had a broken toe and joint pain from a bad motorcycle wreck--it was gout. By then, I had kidney damage. Allopurinol is a retched drug, but controls uric acid, but doesnt prevcent gout--at least in me..just rrying to help

I read your story over again--I jumped to the "I've got it!" too quick, maybe---but if they're saying "osteoarthritis" (a little young for it to be so bad, and osteo is not ALL OVER), they need to check your uric acid, and refuse to have it not treated! I hope al gets better...

Thank you! Im gonna do that! Im looking at my latest bloodwork and it shows that my specimen was lipemic....?? No idea. Gotta call and ask on Monday!

Hey Rocky
THINKING OF YOU!!!!!!!
