Upcoming surgery

0 Recommendations

Hello everyone!
I am preparing for my upcoming surgery on December 18th. As many of you know, I am 30 years old and had bladder cancer at age 2. My bladder was removed and my ureters were placed in my colon. I am having surgery to reverse this procedure I had some precancerous polyps removed from my sigmoid colon. On December 17th I will have bilateral stents placed in my kidneys and the actual surgery takes place on December 18th. I will have an indiana pouch after the surgery is complete. With all of that said, I have two questions. Do they put you to sleep when they insert the stents into your kidneys?? Also, did you lose weight after such an extensive surgery. I am meeting with my doctors pretty soon, but wanted to know what the experience was like from the patient's point of view. Thanks in Advance! Monica

Hi Monica,
When they installed the stents in both of my ureters or changed them out, I was asleep. But one time when I was given a nephrostomy catheter, I was under conscious sedation. This went in the back right flank, thru the kidney and met up with a stent in the right ureter.
I did lose weight with all 3 of my bladder surgeries. (1 RC and neo, and 2 revisions of the neo and ureters. Last time, last March I was down to 140 lbs.
If you need to put weight on after surgery, talk to me. I have some hints and recipes from a nutritionist.
I wish you well.
Keith

Sorry I can't give you any experiences as of yet.. I am scheduled on Dec 16 for RC. But I too wanted to give you positive thoughts and prayers for a uneventful surgery and recovery..My Best to you.

Hi Monica,
I cannot answer the question about the stents since I did not have them. With my RC, I lost very little weight, hardly more than what I think they removed, but that is not the norm. Most people lose 10-20 pounds. My appetite was always good although I was not given anything for 2 days and then slowly given fluids, then creamy liquids, and finally real food. It is important not to eat much in the beginning, only small amounts that are chewed really real.

Thinking of you and wishing you the best.
Hugs,
Nancy

I had a r/c with an ileal conduit . So my surgery was different. When I arrived home from the hospital I was very swollen but when the swelling went down I had lost 20 lbs from before I went in.

Good luck on your surgery. You'll be in my thoughts.

I ad a Rc last year and I lost 10 pounds. I was also in the hospital for four weeks due to bowel obstruction and I lost 10 pounds as well. I was around 109 before my surgery. Its important to get enough protein after the surgery to heal properly.

Good luck!

Anna

Thanks for all of the information. I hear everyone talking about r/c and bcg treatments. Can you explain to me what these procedures are?
