In Memory of John C. Quale

It is with heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the death of BCAN co-founder and board member, John Quale. John was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2000, and since then had been a tireless advocate for new treatment options and increased research. He and his wife, BCAN president Diane Zipursky Quale, founded the organization three years ago to shine a light on this often ignored disease.

In his professional life, John was a prominent communications attorney and partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, but it was John’s courage and strength in how he battled bladder cancer that will remain a remarkable example and legacy of hope for all who walk this path. His death leaves a hole in our bladder cancer family but his life serves as motivation to continue our important work.

Our thoughts are with Diane and their family at this difficult time. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, July 2 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Memorial donations may be made to BCAN http://www.bcan.org/

I am so sorry to hear the news of John's death. It's entirely thanks to John and Diane that we have this amazing place to meet online and support each other. They have accomplished so much in so little time and it is a huge loss to the BC community.

All of our sympathies to Diane and all their family,

Fran and Richard

I too am so sorry about John's passing, my prayers are with Diane and her family including our BCAN family.

When I first started with my bladder cancer I did not know where to turn in 2002 and I had to trust my doctors with the unknown. It was not until much later that I found the BCAN network and was part of a Sunday night chat which helped me immensly. I often wonder about all those that were on the chat because it ended along with many friends with great support. But I am so grateful for the improvements that John and Diane continued to help us all have each other to lean on.

John's passing is a loss to all of us but I'm sure we will all continue to keep this site going because we are all one in this battle.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of John's family and friends. I would like to extend my thankfs for all the hard work and dedication that John and his wife have extended through the network. The process of caring for my mother through bladder cancer was made much more comforting through all the information and caring from this wonderful site. There were times when I couldn't share with anyone I knew because I would have broken; but the network was there.

Please know that John has reached so many people in great need. He made an impact in this world and his life made a difference to so many! Even though my mom passed away in March from bladder cancer, I continue to read through the site and check on everyone each day. He helped to create a family and family continues to care no matter what.

I had the privilege of meeting John when he and Diane came to Atlanta to manage a BCAN booth at the AUA convention. I marveled at the time (and still do), that he and Diane accomplished so much in establishing the first bladder cancer foundation and getting it rolling in such a short time. I will always be grateful to John and Diane for doing something so meaningful to me and so many others.

John will be sorely missed in the never-ending battle against bladder cancer. but all of us can take inspiration for what he did in helping to show us the way to fight it.

I extend my sympathy to Diane and family. My husband was diagnosed with small cell bladder cancer in Sept. 04. Diane and this web site have been helpful in dealing with this rare type of bladder cancer. I am saddened by John's passing; it is a great loss. Marilyn

I also extend my sympathy to Diane and the rest of John's family. They have created a wonderful organization ot help all of us deal with this disease, that many of us probably had never heard of until diagnosed.

I had the fortunate opportunity to have dinner with Diane and John a little over a year ago and spent most the following day with them manning a BCAN booth. John was very open and friendly and we had great conversation that evening and day. He will be missed greatly.

I was diagnoised with bladder cancer in Jan of this year and the BCAN website was so incredibly helpful and encouraging. Bladder cancer is somewhat of an obscure cancer in regards to finding information on this disease and John's site truly educated me as well as finding support through others with this disease.

My thoughts and prayers go out to John's family....he has left an incredible legacy and gift!

I never met John or Diane, but I feel like I owe them so much. This site has been so helpful to me as a resource for information and as a big part of my support team. God bless you John.

Diane your loss must be overwhelming, our prayers are with you. Diane I am ending my discussions with my mantra as I find my way through this ugly thing. (and I am one of the lucky ones at this point) It encourages me and I hope others as well..........Battle on.
Best wishes and sincerest sympathy,
Battle on
