Developing a Pain Management Plan

0 Recommendations

Shiz reports that he is going to request a pain management plan before his next round of BCG. I think this is a fantastic idea and I'm going go in next Tuesday for dose #3 and insist on this.

When I was in real misery after dose #2 last Tuesday, I called my uro's office asking for something besides the peridium, which wasn't doing much at all for the burning and spasm. I suggested maybe I could try Detrol. The receptionist gave my question to the Physician's Assistant doing the BCG, and she called me back.

She had talked to the doctor, and he said they used Detrol for CHRONIC burning and frequency, and he didn't think it would work for the BCG. So he said i should try ibuprofen, (which my digestive system just cannot tolerate, but he didn't know this.)

I know detrol has worked for lots of you. Apparently my uro's office doesn't know this. Why should I have to fight for pain management??? How do we know what works if we haven't tried it?????

I tend not to be very proactive in asking for what I need from doctors and I can see I need to change this!!! I know Cheyenne worked out a plan with his doctor right from the start to minimize side effects. I will be more assertive from now on! That is one thing this disease teaches you, I guess... -Jan

Detrol Tylenol Surgery Pain Ibuprofen

Jan, I just finished my bcg/interferon treatments, and I will have my biopsy surgery 11/11/09. I asked my uro to go ahead and make out my perscriptions ahead of time, so I would'nt have to wait to get them the day of the surgery. He filled the detrol because he said I could use it for the urgency I was experiencing from the treatments, but of course would'nt fill the antibiotics, or pain medicine until the day before surgery. I would insist on something from your uro for the pain, as it sounds like the bcg is rough for you.
Hope the rest of your treatments go much better.
Take care,
Kyle

Hi Jan,

I also had REALLY bad side effects with the BCG. My doc wrote for Darcalma 81.6 mg. It is a generic for utira-C. It numbs the bladder and is an antispasmodic also. Turns your urine blue, not orange(pa said "orange is so yesterday!") After a few days, when I was still having pain, I took 3 aleeve's at a time. Tylenol with codeine would work also I guess. Hope you feel better soon.

Lynda

Thanks, all for your thoughts on this. I really appreciate your ideas! -Jan

Jan, I wish I had advice for you! As a friend, it distresses me to hear you are experiencing so much discomfort.

You are probably right about the need to become more assertive. It is possible to be too nice! Maybe the doctor just doesn't realize how much you are suffering, and you need to insist on getting the help needed.
