Bloated Upper Belly

My upper belly has been bloated to the point that I look like I'm 7 months pregnant and carrying it very high. I still have a waist line on sides and in back. This has happened over the last year or so. I have acid reflux (specialist said that this is not the cause) COPD, emphasyma, CREST/Scleroderma and PAH. If anyone relates to this, please respond. One Dr said Old Age, another said that she doesn't know cause. Yes, I have been on prednisome and gained 30# but this started well before I started prednisone

I don't know . Do you have liver problems? It could be ascitese. Does your stomach digest properly, it could be bloating from something similar to "dead gut" you could have gastroparesis or something. It sounds uncomfortable. I'm sorry.

It is uncomfortable and embarrassing. I have to wear loose tops and then my stomach pertrudes further than the "girls". Thanks for your input.

You might want to have an appointment with a Gastrointestinal Dr. to make sure all is well then if that is all good I would ask for a suggestion if it is painful then it is not a weight problem, I would not think having a bigger tummy would be painful? So I would suggest a Doctor appointment. Good luck. Meema

Meema, Didn't mean to mislead; this is not "painful" per se, just very uncomfortable. It presses up against my ribs and then starts tapering off just above my waist to about 4" below my natural waist. It makes it very difficult to find pants that will stay up and I am definately a pants "jeans" kind of woman. When I am eating a meal about 2/3 of the way I will start feeling more pressure and if I continue eating then I will have pain in my center chest area. This sounds like a digestive problem but I have already had this checked.
Still open for ideas or suggestions. Mainly - has anyone else had this problem? I kind of think that it has to be in some way connected to the scleroderma.

Okay, so I don't have scleroderma and I don't know a ton about it, but what I do know (and I believe I'm correct about this part) is that scleroderma is a connective tissue disease that leads to inflammation, scarring and hardening of the involved skin and organs. So, if you have scleroderma then your vascular system in your abdomen could be damaged. The vessels could be hardening and "not working" correctly, not taking the nutrients from your intestines and not providing the adequate blood flow to your intestines for peristalsis. This could be why your stomach bloats, your intestines are not working properly and the food just sits there for awhile, or it's slow moving.
In your second post when you said it happened after you ate, it also reminded me of a friend that had that problem (maybe others, diarrhea, I don't know) but the doctors couldn't find anything wrong for awhile. Eventually they diagnosed her with chron's. I think it's gastrointestinal related myself from what you say, but it's also still possible that your liver is not working and you've got ascites and that would be likely if you're not experiencing a lot of pain.
Sorry if I confused you. I hope I helped. Good luck and let us know what you find.

I too suffer from the 9 month pregnant look. Among the vast list of weird symptoms, this one bothers me the most. Even though there is no pain associated with this when I do have a good day I still feel sick and ugly. I have had diverticulosis and IBS and perhaps this condition is related. I am too tired to list all my symptoms; but, I'm sooooo glad to have found this site. I have just recently been diagnosed with a MCTD which was a relief and also scared me. I'm looking forward to posting my profile and sharing with all of you the ups and downs we all are suffering from...Lots of love, Amy

I am experiencing a bloated belly also and I have Polymyositis. I also have been taking synthroid for my
thyroid for the last 3 or so years. I noticed the bloating after I started the synthroid. My clothes got
too tight and I felt 4 months pregnant. I had a scan done of my belly and nothing unusual was found. I did a little research and found others who took thyroid meds and gained weight and got a belly. So my doc tor lowered my synthroid to 25mg and added cytomel 25mg. It has only been about a month but I think I can
tell a difference in my stomach size . Plus I can not bend over at all and therefore do not work my core muscles either.

Hi Joan,
I also had bloating that came on slowly over time and got worse till I would look like I was carrying a basket ball under my shirt! My doc got smart and did a blood test for the anti-bodies for candida, since I have never had a yeast infection of any kind anywhere there was only one place left with symptoms that could explain the anti-bodies in my blood. My gut. My doc put me on Nystin for a while. It really helped. And I started a probiotic to help keep the "balance of power" between the interior powers that be. I don't bloat anymore.
I did not have diarrhea with this, like most docs think you should.
You can shift the balance of power back to good bacteria, by taking a probiotic and changing your diet for a while. It takes longer than using the Nystatin, but its doable.
Good luck, I hope this helps!
