Sensitivity to aspirin

1 Recommendation

Has anyone ever heard of asthmatics being sensitive (and even highly allergic) to aspirin??? My husband and my oldest son both have asthma. I'd like to know if this is a common problem.

Although I don't have the sensitivity it is very common with asthmatics and can be life threatening....have you discussed with your doctor......I'm sure he/she can cover all the information you need.

i am allergic to paracetemol and i think maybe aspirin to i think it is the coating of powder on the tablets that i am allergic to

Yes, aspirin sensitivity is quite common. I myself have exercise-induced bronchospasm, aspirin sensitivity, and nasal polyps which they refer to as Samter's triad. definition below. Please be very careful with this as it can cause a life-threatening situation.

They now have what they call an aspirin challenge where they put you in the hospital and give you little bits of aspirin a day for about a week to get your body to accept the aspirin and it then lets you no longer be sensitive to the aspirin and also helps reduce the chance of polyps growing back. I was going to have this done last year, but found out that I had cardiomyopathy with a low ejection fraction and had to cancel it until my ejection fraction comes back up. The only thing with this treatment is that you then have to take aspirin every day for the rest of your life. If you quit, you body reverts back to the aspirin sensitivity.

Samter's triad is a medical condition consisting of asthma, aspirin sensitivity, and nasal/ethmoidal polyposis. It occurs in middle age (twenties and thirties are the most common onset times) and may not include any other allergies.

I found out that I was sensitive to aspirin before I found out that I was asthmatic. Go figure.

Wow! That's incredible. Are you also allergic to other medications? Just curious.....

Yes quite a few: ibuprophen, aspirin, erythromycin, penicillin, sulfa

yes. up to 25% of all people with asthma are aspirin sensitive. Of that 25% about 50% are also NSAID sensitive.
Both my sons are both aspirin and nsaid sensitive. Within 2 hrs of ingestion they go into severe shutdown asthma flares with temps that spike up to 105.
There is also Samters Triad which is asthma, nasal polyps and aspirin sensitivity.
