MRI anxiety

Are there any tips for dealing with the anxiety I get when I go for my MRIs. I had a hard time last month as I'd forgotten that they put your head in a frame. It reminded me of the head mask I had for radiation which I hated.

They can give you some anxiety meds beforehand. Get them if they will help you. Best wishes to you, stephanie

DebbieMc,

You need to think of a regular MRI as preventing a tumor from getting out of hand. In other words, a smaller event gives me more options. The technicians at the hospital I go to ask me if I want some music or a dvd to watch while I have the MRI. I had metal head gear for my Gamma Knife and I find it good not to make random associations with the medical equipment. Pray about it. Play a favorite CD on the way to the MRI.

Hi, there I hope you are getting good MRI result. I am in the same way, my biggest fear is the needle and being tied down under the MRI image section, while they take picture. The manager at the dept came and explained every steps and avoided the visual part of needle and was able to let me listen to my classical music while I closed my eyes and pictured negative end result of MRI (no more tumor). I understand it is short time, but feels like long time. For me going to the hospital was the biggest battle and now MRI events were another step to over come. My dear stay strong and God bless you.

Thanks for the tips. I guess me and that machine are going to have to become friends.
My first MRI since I started treatment was clear. This one is to check to see if the tumour is still dormant. I pray that it is and my chemo can continue until November!

The suggestions that my son's therapist came up with were to find a distraction (I.e. music), think of a happy place to go to mentally, to remember mommy is nearby (perhaps a loved one or close friend to,lend support), and to use the relaxation techniques she taught him (deep, calm breathing).

I just close my eyes and think about being on the beach with the waves crashing in the sand and the warm sun beating down on me and before you know it, its all over with!

I need to have an MRI every 6-8 months and have extreme claustrauphobia! I take Valium that my Dr. prescribes 1 hour before the MRI and then another 1/2 hour.I have major anxiety !!! I also make sure The MRI place has Music , (you can still hear all the knocking but the Music makes a big difference!) Then another idea close your eyes before and Make pretend your in your favorite place....I always make pretend I am on a beach in Hawaii and the sun is shining on me. Although by the time the Valium kicks in you shouldn't need to be thinking about anything.

I hope this helps you...I no longer am in fear of my MRI's! I hope you won't be either!!

I forgot to tell you I also had radiation For 8 weeks and had the same feelings you did!! I am a 2x survivor So I have been going through the MRI's ever since they started! I can't tell you how many things I tried until I turned to The meds because I don't like to have to rely on them!
