ALS and other things we have in common

0 Recommendations

My husband is in the early stages with a dx of ALS for 2 years. He is being turned down yet for VA benefits and has 10% for his type II diabetes only. He is a navy vet..served 2 tours in Vietnam.

My son in law was in Desert Storm and is on 80% disability from the military.

You should contact a veteran's advocacy organization in your state. Examples are PVA, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans. In my state PVA has been very helpful. ALS diagnosis should warrant a 30% minimum disability.

You say your husband is in the early stages of the diagnosis of ALS. Does that mean he hasn't gone through the tests? As most anyone who has gone through this [My husband was diagnosed in February of 07 and died this past July 09] knows that the diagnosis does take some time. Once he is diagnosed and gets his compensation and pension physical t [comp. and pen.] he would be at the minimum 30% disability. This does all take time.
You do want an advocate. We used/use PVA (paralized veterans of America). There is no charge and they are WONDERFUL. Here in Maine, which is the Northeast VA section, we have received nothing but the absolute BEST care. Be patient. With luck you may find your husband does not have ALS.
Another note--do yourself a huge favor and find an ALS support group. The benefits from a support group are too huge for words.
God Bless

Helped a friend of mine who was DX about 3 years ago and "going down" fast. He spent 20 years in the Navy. The best source I found to assist him was the PVA...Don't get me wrong, it is still a lengthy process, (it is the federal government), but they can help get things working, I believe, faster than just the patient or their family. My friend is now listed as 100 % disbled.....GOOD LUCK !!!

Fight for what you have coming to you. I fought for my brother he was military but for a short time. I got him everything while he was alive and even after he passed. Example: He was on a vant for 10 years and they wanted the vent back after he passed. I got that vent to be able to be donated to another ALS Patient that could not afford it.
FIGHT FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE COMING FOR YOU.
Hang in there. Looking into to talking to ALS to direct you what you need to do. Talk to doctors. Talk to his branch of the military.
Hang in there.
I am here for you if you ever want to talk.
