Thinking about the holidays

0 Recommendations

With Thanksgiving coming up, my mom is asking me what she will do that day. There is so much she can't have. It most definitely will be tough as she can't resist what is there. We go to my aunt's house for the holiday so I am hoping that I can have enough alternatives to help her make it through the day. Any thoughts or successful holiday dinners? Thinking ahead I know, but it is not easy to find good recipes and food choices. I will post anything I find, but would appreciate any input you all have .

Thanks,
gayle

my mom was wondering the same thing for me. don't really know what to cook for me except mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and mac and cheese. I know I may be able to do a little of the turkey (I do okay with chicken and tuna), but the other stuff we normally have is out, at least for me

Sounds a lot like my mom. I think she might be able to do a little turkey if I shred it. She can do the mashed potato if I mix it with skim milk and without all that butter. Perhaps some sweet potato. It is all the stuff before the meal and after that I worry about too. I worry about the food being out all day. I am hunting down appetizer and dessert recipes too. I'll post as I find them.

When I go to church dinners or family dinners I eat the sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and jello salads. They usually have nuts in them but not so much that they really bother me. If you can't eat the nuts you can always move them to the side. I find the jello salads make me feel like I am not missing out so much on things. I know we aer not to have cake or pie but we usually fix a fruit pie and I can eat the fruit out of it too. I am guilty of taking a bite of a cake that looks to scrumptious to do without but limit it to a bite so I get away with that too pretty much, at least I think I do. I drink an exhorbitant amount of liquids too, root beer or tea and this helps to move things into the stomach and from there I just don't know how long it take it to get out but I do not feel sick like I do when I eat things I am not supposed to. I love jello salads as they can be made with fruit and other soft things without a lot of fat in them.

Your mom might be too full from the potatoes and other things to want dessert. I don't think she will be able to even consider dessert - I wouldn't. Maybe a cup of tea / coffee but that's it.

Drinking a glass of water or something when she gets to your aunt's house may curb the desire to eat what she shouldn't (appetizers). Also, holding a drink will keep her hands / mouth busy. It's a trick a lot of people on diets use when at parties to keep themselves from eating the junk.

I think potatoes, yams, and mac & cheese are great suggestions. Also possibly clear soup, if any is being served (no cream soups). Thanksgiving is hard for us - but I have learned to just eat slowly and enjoy the company.

Just eat the pumpkin pie. That's the whole point, anyway, I think. I am supposed to cook this year. Last year, my husband and I had a "disagreement" about the time the turkey would take to thaw.
So there was no turkey. There was turkey-meat.
Obviously, he should have listened to me. I can thaw, just not cook--especially when the directions are written on the darn bird.

It is all about the pie! I am trying to find a recipe that has little fat and fiber. Do you indulge in the crust or do make it without? I love pumpkin pie and every other kind of pie. It will probably be good for all of us to change our ways and not sit around the table of food. I might actually lose a pound or two myself while I help mom stay out of the not so good for you food.
