Stomach Removal

0 Recommendations

I have just come home after being in the hospital and the doctors discussed with me the possibility of removing my stomach. They said that they have done everything they can for me and because I have just about given up eating and have lost so much weight they think that I should seriously consider this. My family and I are discussing it and doing some research and then I will make a decision. I have got to the point that even looking at food or smelling it makes me feel ill and then I don't want to eat. I can't drink the supplements like Ensure or any other liquid food like milkshakes as they get to my throat and come right up again. If anyone has any input for me I would greatly appreciate it. All the best to you all. Mags.

Oh, dear Mags, I hate that it has come to this point. I'm sorry you've been in the hospital. You have endured so much more then any person should have to. I wish they had more options for you, other then something this drastic. I'm sure this is a hard decision to have to make. I'm so glad you have your family for support and encouragement. Only you can make this decision, but I'm sure it helps to have them there to talk all the pros and cons over with. Have the doctors given you any kind of insight into what things will be like after the surgery, if you do have your stomach removed? I would want to hear from them what they think the pros and cons could possibly be for you. Pray for guidence. I am praying for you, like always, and I hope you know that if you ever need to just talk, no matter if it's to vent (everyone needs to from time to time), to bounce your thoughts and ideas off of, or ANYTHING else, you can e-mail me or call. You're always in my thoughts and prayers.

Mags,

I am so sorry you are forced with this decision. Have you gotten a second opinion? At least with a feeding tube, it is not permanent--this obviously is. I am sure you are not entering into this lightly--I am just concerned because I have never heard of such a drastic step. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Michelle

Mags,

I am so stunned. I too, am just getting out of the hospital.

I know that you and your family will make the right decision. Please feel free to call or e-mail me. My heart and prayers go out to you.

Hi Charity. I am so sorry that I am only getting back to you but I am still recovering from my knee replacement surgery and find it hard to sit at the computerf or any length of time. I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and are feeling better plus staying out of the hospital. About the suggested stomach removal, my daughter is looking into natural remedies for me at the moment but I am not too hopeful as I have already tried a number of them that have been suggested here but I am willing to try anything. The doctors have told me that feeding tubes are out for me because of the high risk of infection plus my being an insulin dependant diabetic. They also said that I would have to have an "in" tube and an "out" tube which would virtually make an invalid out of me and you know how I like to travel so it wouldn't be an option for me anyway. I am just taking it all in my stride and trying to stay happy and remind myself everyday that there are people out there who are far worse off than me and that puts it all in perspective. Stay well my dear you are always in my thoughts. Joyce

Hi Michelle and Charlotte. Thank you for your kind remarks, I hope that you are both doing as well as can be while suffering from this dreaded GP. I still haven't made a decision about the stomach removal as it is such a big step. I live with my daughter and her husband and my son-in-law is really against me having it done as he is afraid that I won't recover well. I had knee replacment surgery on 5 November and have had a really hard time getting over it plus it seems that my GP is worse since the surgery so I am in a "wait and see" mode. I try to stay positive and happy and keep reminding myself that there are folk out there with terminal illnesses and others that are a lot worse off than me. I hope that you have a very Happy New Year. Stay Safe, Happy and above all Healthy in 2008. Kind regards. Joyce (Mags)

Joyce,

As always it is great to hear from you, I just wish things were going better for you. I hate that you are having such a hard recovery from your knee surgery. How is the pt going?

We had a nice Christmas. We keep it very relaxing. Spending the day with my 7 year old nephew and seeing his excitment just makes it so fun. I hope you and your family also had a nice Christmas.

I'm sure the decision about the stomach removal isn't an easy one to make. Maybe your daughter will find something new while looking into natural remedies, but I know what you mean about having tried so many in the past. It's hard to put much confidence into a med. or remedies when so many in the past haven't helped.

How do they plan on you getting the proper amount of nutrition if they remove your stomach? Will you have to do a liquid diet?

I know how much you love to travel and you are such a strong person to keep going the way you do. I wish they could get you on the road to recover with your knee and stomach so you can continue to travel. You always seem to go to very interesting and fun places. I'm sure being able to travel again would be one of the best meds. possible for you.

Hope things improve for you and you can have a better 2008! Look roward to hearing from you again soon!
You are always in my thoughts and prayers,
Charity
