Stealth Nausea Attacks

0 Recommendations

Well today I got up and felt absolutely tiptop. Not many days that I can say that so I was enjoying it while I could. Then what I'm beginning to think of as a Stealth Nausea Attack flew in and I went from feeling fine to horribly nauseated in less than a minute. Had eaten my normal breakfast and had been sipping my usual water. Anyhow when the attack hit, I took a Phenergan and ending up sleeping most of the day away. Is Phenergan okay to take with GP? It was on my med list that my doctor should have seen, but my doctor didn't say anything about it. He was more concerned with telling me the potential side effects of the Reglan he wants me to take. This GP is all new to me. I'm just glad there is finally a name to why I get these attacks along with the other stuff. I was starting to think it was all in my head.

Gailete,
I have lived on Phenergan for years now. I take it in pill form, suppositories and shots. It is absolutely o.k. to take for the nausea with GP. I also use Zofran, and Marinol for nausea too so you might keep those in mind if the phenergan stops helping. I reached a point where I have to alternate because if I use any one of them too often they quit working as well for me.

I also live on phenergan, similar to chewy's experience, I now crush it thru my j-tube. I also use marinol. I don't have issues with either med. When it's all new, it becomes overwhelming. You'll get used to it, and soon you'll know what will help. Good luck. michelle

Thank you. I usually have to take at least one a month currently, but up to this year it was only every couple months that I needed one. I'm on so many meds it is hard to know what is messing up my gut and what might be helping, and of course I can't just drop the meds for my other diseases. I'm sure eventually I'll get used to what is happening. Thanks for writing back. I'm getting more info here than anywhere else I could find.

Too bad doctor's don't give out little GP and you booklets.

I would try to use other things first such as sips of warm coke, gingerale, 7up. They do not make your sleepy and may help.

Many of us were glad to learn it was not "all in our heads". Could not understand how my stomach hurt if my head was defective.

I used to take Reglan and all the others. Now I take IV Zofran, phenergan via the j-tube, and compazine suppositories. I hate those days when the nausea creeps up on you so badly and you aren't at home to make it better!

Mimi

Seems like I could handle it better if it did creep up. It is the going from 'fine' to I'm about to puke in less than 10 seconds that gets me! But however it shows up, nausea is never fun. When you are nauseated and pregnant at least there is the hope of a fine baby at the end of it all, but with this, there is nothing to look forward to.

HI NOvagrad,

I have the same meds including the marinol, do you smoke it too? Helps me, I have felt a bit society pressured to not mention it much. But I have gone through the mill and for me smoking three hits of a pipe of pot every three to four hours helps, A LOT!!! The marinol I use when I can not have the smoke. Zofran is in my TPN and is dripped in all night for 12 hours and I have the reglan dripping in also. I do the other stuff as a suppository. My digestive system does not absorb much at all, so putting things in that way does not work well. For the sudden attacks, have you ever tried aromea therapy. Ya, I know sounds crazy, but I have those too and if I have a smell with me, ginger works best on nausea, it can stop it or at least diminish it for the short term. Good luck!

Marinol, is that a fancy name for grass? This is all so crazy. I got taken off of my Morphine yesterday and we are going to try Methadone instead. I'm starting to feel like a junky and have never 'done' drugs, alcohol or smoked. Wouldn't that be strange to end up doing all the things I avoided with doctors permission??!?

Sorry, I know it isn't a laughing matter, but I take tickles to my funny bone where ever I can fine them these days!

Gailette,
Marinol is a legal pill that is prescribed by a doctor. It contains the same ingredient that is active in marijuana that fights nausea. It does increase appetite and can give you a "loopy" feeling if you are very sensitive to medicine...but it works well to combat nausea. I usually save it for the worst times!
But, it is a legal prescription pill.

Thank you. I knew that for medicinal purposes, marijuana is prescribed, but I didn't know the medical name for it or how it was dispensed. Thanks for the info. Sorry if I seemed insulting about, but as I said it gave me the giggles and I need a few giggles, plus I'm feeling just a bit loopy today with my new med. Rather loopy than sick though!

What is marinol? I have not heard of it. I am allergic to phenergan, compazine, reglan, tigan. Zofran ODT is the only anti emetic that helps now. I am finding myself taking more that I used to lately.
I am interested in the marinol.
Thank you. Take Care, Sara

I just read the answer. I don't think I am there yet. I'll stick to the zofran until God forbid it would not work anymore. Thanks for the info everyone. good night, Sara

Dear Gailete, I read your post and like many here when I am nauseated I use the pheragan and it works but its sedating. As for the Reglan, that is another story, let me tell you about some of the side effects myself and others have shown. Some people have no side effects, but you need to know, so if they happen, and you have to go to the ER, you know what and why. First it's a drug that helps our stomach to churn or muscles to move so we can digest out food. If it works wonderful, I was on it for months and then the side effects for me showed up as sleepless nights, very nervous, jittery figiting all day, lactation of my breast w/ extreme tenderness. Some women actually get to the point where they produce milk! I told my doctor and we agreed to stop it. Other people have had something called tardive dyskesia, it shows as when you getting so nervous, then you freak out, then your tongue sticks straight out, & your neck goes to one side as far as possible. No one ever tells us this, look it up on the internet, some people have had it and thought they were losing their minds first and then realized what was happening with their mouths and neck. If you get to that point, then the nurse will give you benadryl in a vein as your neck is so cued & you can't swallow with your tongue out. With many that is it, they quit the drug with some they stay that way, it's irreversable!!!. Also on drugs, anything that sedates us with cause the stomach and nausea to be worse. If we have cramps it may be old food that's sitting and not digesting, so getting on a good laxative is important, some use prune juice, milk of magnesia, and slippery elm, etc. You will find yours in time, take care of your body esp. now. With GP our tummy just doesn't work, please see the GP diet on the internet, you will see the foods we can eat, yes it's limited but at least we can eat. Some of our fellows here are on tube feeds, some even worse they can't eat period. One thing that works is walking maybe just gravity, I find it works so well for me also. You will see that fiber and fats... are to be avoided, many can't do dairy anymore, But if you avoid things like bean, lentils, veggies, anything with skin and nuts you should be okay. Fresh apples even peeled are not good, but cooked or applesauce are fine. Odd things like orange juice with pulp will hurt the tummy? and green beans oh boy.. avoid those. Hoping you have a healthy and blessed day. Big Hug Gina
