sleep problems

0 Recommendations

I was just curious. I know I have seen others say that they have problems sleeping, because of pain, nausea, or whaterever else I was just wondering how many on here have similar problems. I have a hard time sleeping more then a couple of hours because if I do manage to get to sleep it isn't long before I wake up sick or in pain.
Thanks,
Char

Char,

Eversince I got out of the hospital on May 25, 2006, I have not been sleeping well. It has gotten worse over the past several months. Before my ablation, I wasn't able to sleep well because my heart rate was going so fast. Now, it's because of the rapid heard rate and stomach pain. The most I get is 3 hours each night, but last week, I had two nights where I only had 1.5 hours of sleep. If you notice my postings, I'm on the computer between 2 & 3 a.m. I have to wear myself out before I turn in. I find myself dusting off the furniture in the wee hours of the morning just to keep myself busy and forget about the pain. During the day, I chat on the phone. If I'm alone and I feel the pain, I get really depressed. I was just actually thinking that maybe I should ask my doctor for a prescription for anti-depressant and/or nausea. I've been turning down his prescription for anti-depressants for the longest time but I think it's time to try it. I think I've tried it once before but it didn't help -- it just caused more palpitations, which is not good if you already have a-fib. Maybe one or both will help with the sleeping problem. Are you on anti-depressant and if so, did it help you get some sleep? I've gotten so used to my a-fib that when my heart beats normally while I'm asleep, it wakes me up and I wonder if I'm still alive. And then with the pain, when my husband wakes me up before he leaves for work, the first thing I feel is the pain and makes me think why do I have to wake up?

Good night!
Lillian

Char,

I have had sleeping problems for several years. I usually do not sleep more than four hours if I am lucky. There are nights that I do not sleep at all. On nights I do sleep I wake up several times a night usually to use the bathroom, but sometimes just because I am in so much pain I have to get up and move. I have been told I also have restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea but so far I have not sought treatment for either. I am thinking about asking for something for the RLS because it has been really bad lately. Anyway, chalk this one up to one more similiarity that we have. Hope all is well.

Char:

I must take Ativan to get to sleep-otherwise I just lay in bed wide awake. deb

Lillian,

I know what you mean, when you are finally asleep and someone or something wakes you up it's frustrating. When awake you have to deal with all the pain and nausea. When feeling horrible I wish I could just curl up in the bed and sleep. Sometimes when I get even less then normal amounts of sleep for me several nights in a row it just makes things worse. It's like you need the energy just to get through the day, and it's so hard when you don't have it.

Some antidepressants can be used to treat pain, and a long time ago we tried a couple to see if it helped my pain, but we never saw any improvement with them. I don't think they did much to help with sleep either, but I know some people sleep better with them. I don't think it would hurt for you to try them. Maybe you could be one of the people that they help sleep.

Hope your week is going well,
Char

Deb,

I'm glad you have found something that helps you. It's so hard to go day after day with little to no sleep. How have you been this week?
Char

Michelle,

It seems like there is so much that we all have in comman, symptoms I'm sure doctors haven't put together. It would be so nice if there was more research going into gp and all the things that seem to go with it.

Have you ever tried anything for the RLS before? That would be great if you could get something for that and then be able to get more sleep. I guess the med for that wouldn't help the stomach problems, but maybe help you get more rest anyways.

Let me know how it goes,
Char

Have you heard any news? Basically, I'm just existing. I'm in alot of pain and now my lower abdomen(below the belly button) keeps getting really distended. Not sure what's causing this but I feel like I'm going to blow up.

This illness has caused me to be on a lot more medication, just to get thru each day. I have a wonderful psychiatrist and family doctor, as well as my GI doctor. There is no sense for anyone to suffer every night because you cannot sleep. I look forward to bed time, when I am having a really bad GI day. I am prescribed Ambien CR 12.5mg, as well as Xanax ER 1mg. I also have restless legs and take requip at bedtime also. It really helps rls. Lets face it,...when you are sick and in pain, it causes stress and anxiety. Xanax definately helps lessen all of it. I also recommend an antidepressant. Depression snuck up on me before I knew it due to being sick all the time. I felt simply hopeless and scared, that I was never going to get better. The antidepressant has helped with those thoughts. I believe keeping a positive look on things is helpful with staying well. Take care and don't be afraid to ask your doctors for help. If they are good, they will know what you are going thru, requires help with sleep, stress, depression, ect..

Good Luck, Rhonda

Deb,

Do you think the distention could be from constipation? I know that always makes me even more distended. I hope you are doing better by now.
Charity

You-know-that could be it. I'm on tpn so you don't go much anyway. I'm just curious Charity-in your research, doctor's visits, etc., have you heard anyone make the connection between removing the gallbladder and gastroparesis. It seems like alot of us have that connection.
debbie

Deb,

I know that there is a connection in if the nerve is cut during surgery. Also in my case I had my gallbladder removed, because the gp had progressed there. Those are the only connections I know about.

hey i know exactly what you r going thru, my sister in law has RLS and her DR. prescribed Neurontin. she says it works, i also have Fibro and take neurontin. i think i am gonna up my dose it is supposed to be 300 milli 3 times a day. but i have got to sleep so i am just gonna take like 900 milli tonight and see how that works. Some on here take up to 2700 milli a night, i am also on an antidepressent. Prozac. Oldest Antidepressent in the world. lol but it works great for me. 4/ 20 milligrams every morning

i also take ativan but i over take it to much. it just feels so damn good ya know. thats why i am trying to find the right dosage of Neurontin to put me to sleep and that way i can be a happy wife and mother the next day. :>?

I too have a tremendously hard time falling and staying asleep. This started for me after a pacemaker implant ( heart) which started an atrial arrythmia and my motility issues ( damage to vagus nerve???)
Since I've had a colostomy in 2008, I don't have too much trouble with abdominal pain and bloating and constipation, but I have long periods like several month of non-stop heart arrythmia like 24/7 abd it is so difficult to sleep.
I too rely on Ambien or Tyleonol PM when I get so desperate for some sleep.

Yes I have had sleeping problems for a long time due to the digestive problems. I take Restoril and then my doctor put me on 3 300mgs of Neurotin a day, I take 1 in the evening and I was taking 2 at night, but 2 was just too much for me. When I woke up in the morning it literally took me hours to really wake up and get going. I now take 1 neurotin at bedtime with my sleeping pill.

Good luck
