Sigmoid resection

0 Recommendations

Has anybody out there had a sigmoid resection? My daughter has had constipation since birth. They are now recommending this surgery. Any help and information would be greatly appreciated.

I have personally had a total colectomy. I have had problems since birth as well, unfortunately they waited for years before officially diagnosing me so I was beyond the point of having a resection done. I can tell you that I successfully weathered the total colectomy and I have no doubt that your daughter will do amazingly well since the procedure has come a long way. Hopefully, by getting this surgery done now, she can avoid a colectomy in the future. I hope that this puts your mind at ease. I will keep you and your daughter in my thoughts and prayers. Good Luck!

I had an end sigmoid colostomy in January after a year and a half inability to evacuate waste due to what they called outlet obstruction. It has improved my life very much ( to the point of actually having a life again). For me I could not have the resection and reconnection to the rectum, because thats what was what was not working in my case, so I had to have an ostomy.
From all the doctors and tests that I had, they determined that my motility was okay . I know that its really important to know for sure if gut motility is okay, because if its not then taking just a portion of the colon usually does not solve the constipation and then the only thing to do a colectomy.
Good luck to your daughter - I know I am so glad I had the surgery

I have a question have they tested your child for Hirschsprungs? This causes constipation. All kids with HD have a surgery called a pullthrough. Where they remove the affected part of the intestines. My son was dx at 2 days old, but there are other kids that were dx later. Just something else to thik about.
