Hi, Rachel. I took domperidone (Motilium) for a while, and after getting the dose high enough, it helped a lot. I could almost eat normally for a while. But, due to side effects, I had to stop it. Some people do not have as many side effects, though. Why did you stop taking Reglan? Reglan and domperidone/Motilium, are similar, but it seems as though Motilium is considered a little safer (and if you get side effects, they are supposedly more likely to go away than they are with Reglan). Are you familiar with this medication? It's not FDA approved, so you would have to order it on-line from another country or find a compound pharmacy that will make it for you (that's what I did).

There are other medications out there, but this is all that I have tried so it's the one I know the most about. Other people on this site take medications that they will hopefully be able to tell you more about. And some people have tried some natural remedies as well.

Good luck! Please let me know if you have any more questions.

I had just an awful time with Reglan, as is the case with many. It caused me so many neurological side effects I almost ended up with an MS diagnosis. I was switched to Domperidone, which I import from New Zealand. Similar drug except it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier so the side effects aren't quite as severe. For me (it won't be the same for everyone) it works enough for me to eat, but I still have some abdominal issues and nausea. Domperidone is generally considered to be the most effective of the prokinetic drugs. (the others tend to be of temporary relief.)

as for alternative therapies, I run a lot. I noticed when I stop for a period I almost immediately flare. My GI told me that the bouncing motion of my GI tract during my running pace mimicked contractions and aided in motility. I also use BCAAs (branch chain amino acids) L-carnitine, Fennel and Licorice tea, myofascial massage (you essentially rock your organs back and forth with your hands) and senna. Definitely check with your dr before using any alternatives, but they are what help me.

Rachel,
I have used Reglan, Erythamyacin and domperidone. Erythamyacin only made me throw up more. The domperidone didn't help my stomach and caused me to have muscle spasms. Reglan was the worst of all. It caused me to have twitches and jerks that were awful.
I was put on it by a GI doctor who then basically released me as his patient. I didn't know what was causing the twitches until I was seeing another GI doctor. He noticed immediately the awful twitches and immediately told me to stop the reglan. Then I was talking to my neurologists and she about went through the roof...she told me to Never take Reglan again. I guess for some people it can cause Parkinson like symptoms and I was one of those people.
I hope that you are able to find something that will help you. We are all so different in how we react to medicines, so just because something hasn't worked for one person doesn't mean it won't work for you.

Rachel,

I am currenty taking Reglan four times per day. I have been on it for about two years now and luckily have never experienced the side effects that others have. I have also been on EES, which like Judy, made me violently ill, Zelnorm which caused constant diarrhea and Domperidome which caused terrible stomach cramping and did not help me at all. I am currently taking Ativan three times a day as well and it allows me to actually eat solid foods again. I still have my bad days when I can only tolerate my tube feeds but in general the Ativan has made things alot better. I am hoping that once I have the gastric pacer put in that I will be able to back off on some of the meds I am now taking. Good luck in your search.

Michelle
