I was diagnosed a few months ago with GP I was just wondering If anyone knows what causes this I do not have diabetes. Also I have been on Domperidone and wondering how long I would have to be on it and what the long term side effects are of it. I am feeling ok now and just starting to eat a little, but if I start to take less mg. of it will I go back to feeling sick again. Has anyone ever tried acupuncture to help.
Thanks

Stacy75,
Even the docs don't know what causes non-diabetic gp. I'm in that group with you. Some say it could be from a previous surgery, or a virus, etc.
As for the domperidone, I took it but it didn't do anything for me so I can't tell you how long you may have to be on it or the long term side effects. I'm assuming that it will be as long as it works for you.
After trying all the drugs with no luck, I had to have a gastric pacer put in. That's working well.
Best of luck in your fight with gp. It seems that you've caught it early enough that the drugs may work for you. I hope so.

Thank you for your reply. I am glad to hear that the pacer is working for you my Dr. mentioned me doing that if the med didn't work. I had chemo from a molar pregnancy I have heard the chemo may have caused it I don't know. I wish the best for you and hope that eveything goes well. Take care
Stacy

Hey, I too have GP, and don't know the cause. I guess they call us idiopathic GP because the cause is unknown unfortunatly. And actually the government is canceling the funding for the research of GP in 2011. There is a website you can go to to try and help. www.digestivedisstress.com they have letters you can print out and mail to the government to try and stop this! Also, you can email the research center-they are trying to have a GP awareness day in washington DC, so if your interested in that give em an email. Try and spread the word!! Hope you're havin a good tummy day!

Mine started after I had pneumonia and took the antibiotic levaquin.

Glad the domperidone works for you! There are people who have GP for 6mos to 2 years. I forget what that is called! Some people have it then it gets better but can have times when it acts up again. There's no method to it's madness it seems.

Others have said acupuncture works. I haven't tried it because my insurance doesn't cover it. But it's worth a try!

Mine has been brought on by scleroderma. My intestines don't work either. I just had an ultra sound done on my stomach and they found calcification on my kidney. I am having a CAT Scan today with contrast and Barium swallow. Last time I had a barium enema I almost ruptured because I couldn't get it out of my intestines since they seem to work on gravity alone. I am terrified. I know its coming in the other direction but it still must go out. I am prepared with loads of laxatives and plenty of water. Please keep me in your prayers!

Hi Stacy:

I've heard others on this site have come down with GP from chemo, so I know you are not alone. I have autonomic neuropathy and the GP and colonic inertia I have are thought to be from that. I had a bad anaphylactic reaction which sparked the autonomic neuropathy. I also have other GI problems like malabsorption and eosinophilic enteritis. The GP is the most miserable. I'm fed via a feeding tube. We are here to answer any of your questions and to listen if you want to vent! Welcome!

Mountainwoman- you have been added to my prayer list. Stacie- welcome to the group.

From what I understand, there are multiple causes of GP, the most common being
diabetes, post surgical (mine, probably), viral (they can get better in 6 months to 5 years), thyroid, connected with some sort of autoimmune disease & the second most common diagnosis is "ideopathic" (which means they have no idea).

I think mine is post surgery (my GI originally said viral, but he's not saying that anymore). I don't have the throwing up sort; mine is more related to GERD, bloating, & pain. Mine cycles good & bad. I don't do motility drugs for various reasons not relevant here. I do diet & a slew of supplements. I have found abdominal massage & cranial sacral massage to help. I've heard of others that accupuncture helped to various degrees. Each of us seems to be different & needs to find what works for them.

Dear Stacy,
As you can see from other people's responses, gastroparesis can have many different possible causes. I once even had a doctor suggest that I see if I had a possible mitochondrian disorder. I met once with some geneticists, but after that nothing more was done and no tests. I am not completely sure what caused mine although I think some surgery may have complicated it, but I did have some digestive issues even before my first surgery, and one doctor who saw me later thought I might have had gastroparesis before that, but I am not sure.

I was on Domperidone for about a year. It did not help me, but I know that it has helped some other people. The only side effects that I had when I was on the higher doses was a slight breast increase and a little lactation, nothing too bothersome for me.

I hope that you come to feel welcome here. Just remember that there will always be a shoulder to lean on here if ever you have need. Best of wishes and many hugs.

Warm regards,
Bobbiejo
