Pregnancy and Gastroparesis

0 Recommendations

HI...I was wondering if anyone out there has been pregnant with GP and everything is going well? I wanted to start taking viatmins and I can't do that being on Protonix, I'm taking it upon myself to stop taking it. I'm going to the doc in a few weeks but I wanted to start taking prenatel vitamins. Did anyone have any problems with taking vitiamins and eating problems while pregnant?

Counseling Protonix Pregnancy Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis and pregnancy....it seems there is no information out there. I have a gastric neurostimulator from having severe gastroparesis, and now I am pregnant. I was doing pretty well after the gastric neutrostimulator took two years to adjust. And because the device is not approved for pregnant women, they had to turn it off. So far, I am only 8 weeks pregnant. I am a determined person and have fought the urge to throw up, which is absolutely constant. It was difficult at first to know if it was caused from "morning sickness" or my illness. I found out that I am sick when I eat food that is difficult to digest.

So I guess to answer your question without giving you my entire life story...

I take a pre-natal that gel capsule and so far have not had any problems. I think that it is easier to digest when its not in the solid pill form.

Eating problems, well it is to be expected I guess. So far I am having a lot of difficulty eating meat and fresh veggies and salad. Of course no fried foods, but I have no desire to eat them anyway. I also drink a Boost everyday because liquids are easiest to digest.

Anyway, good luck. I feel that I am the only one out there with severe gastroparesis and pregnancy. My doctor has been implanting the neurostimulator since the 90s and so far has not had one patient become pregnant.

Hope I answered your question. And I don't want to discourage you, or anyone else, but it definitely is not easy. Some people with gastroparesis actually get better when they are pregnant, and there isn't really a medical answer for that.

I didn't know if you knew that fresh veggies & salad aren't recommended for us who have GP. We can have well cooked carrots, beets, & squash. We aren't supposed to have anything like cabbage, brocolli, brussell sprouts, or cauliflower. The easiest to digest proteins are whey powder, eggs, ground chicken or turkey, & fish. To stay healthy during your pregnancies, you may want to consider juicing. I can drink juice made of apple, kale, celery, & carrots. There are many good combinations. Just be careful with these because they don't always agree with everyone. A good idea may be to get veggie juice already made up to see how you do. They can be found in a health food store & some farmers' market type stores.

Do you also know that nuts, seeds & berries can be very difficult for us? All these things as well as fresh fruits with skins are on that DO NOT list. And we must limit our fats as well. It's extremely hard for us to eat HEALTHY. We must find ways to get the full benefits out of our foods.

I don't mean to sound like a meddling grandmother. I just hope some of what I've suggested helps you. I wish you both symptom free pregnancies. Best of luck to you both.

Love & prayers, Gajudy

p.s. I've had 5 babies, but that was before my GP.

I just wanted to say that I am so glad that I am not the only one feeling like there is very little information out there about having gastroparesis and wanting to get pregnant. I have consulted my doctor about my decision to start my family. I feel that I am that point to want to try it and go with it open to anything that can take place. My doctor has recommended that I get genetic counseling. Has any one else been recommended this same thing? I told my mom that this was their recommendation and she told me they did it when I was a baby becuse they need to make sure that since I was the first born it would not be passed on to my siblings. There was a determination that it was not genetic. Wondering if anyone has herd of gastroparesis being genetic. My Dotor said that as long as it isnt genetic she didn't think that there would be a problem. I am also on tpn where baby and myself would be able to recieve the proper nutrition since I dont absorb food that I eat. Not sure if this is the case for you. It would be so much helpful if smeone else was able to share their storeis beacuse I know that when I tell people that I am pregnant they will question it. I have been willing to take this challenge on even though i is a new experience and glad to know that others feel the same desire as myself.

Yes, GP can be genetic. I am working with a geneticist right now to determine if this is my problem; he says some of my other health issues are suspicious. The tests come back in three weeks.

well, I just found out today that i am pregnant... i am scared s***less right now... I know that God is in control but at the same time i am very nervous.... I am scared to vomit and am nervous that the pregnancy will make my nausea worse and i will throw up... but also... i am on a liquid diet... how will a baby and i survive on boost and broths and liquid vitamins???
if anyone has any tips... please let me know!
~Becky
