Muscle Spasms

Hi, everyone. I wrote a little bit about this before, but I was hoping for some more specific feedback. I finally stopped taking domperidone for my GP because of side effects. First it was the high prolactin levels causing lactation, amennorhea, and mood difficulties. Then, I began having muscle spasms, and this was the last straw. My GI doctor said to come off of the domperidone for two weeks to see if the spasms stop and this would help determine if it really is the medication that has been causing them. Well, it's been about two and a half weeks, and the spasms seem to have quieted over all, but they still happen (and last night they were kind of strong, like they were at first). Sometimes it's just facial twitches that don't last long, other times it's spasms in my arms, fingers, etc. I'm worried that if it wasn't all over within the two week time frame, that maybe it's not the medication after all, but something new going on. Has anyone else had experience with this? I know some people mentioned having muscle spasms with domperidone. How long did it take for them to go away? I'm worried that maybe I have some other neurological problem- especially since GP is related to nerve function and my doctors don't know what brought that on. My heart palpitations/arrythmia are nerve related and the doctors don't know the cause of that, either. Now I have muscle spasms, too.... Between all this and the CF-related recurrent pancreatitis and chronic sinus/respiratory infections, I feel like I'm going to go crazy managing so many different things (as I know most of you can relate to!!).

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I will follow up with my doctor, but it may take a while to get in, and I'm not so sure any of my doctors will have a great answer for me.

Thanks!!

Kate

Kate,
I was one of the people who had to quit taking domperidone because of muscle spasms. I really don't know how long it took for the spasms to get better. It was 4 years ago! Could the spasms be a result of the combination of the domperidone with another medication? I don't know what all you are taking, but I have also had problems with Lyrica doing me the same way, plus making my hands and legs numb. So, I know there are other medicines that could cause it, especially mixed with something else.
Have you had any tests done on your autonomic nervous system? Do you have a neurologist?
I think you should check into having some of these tests to find out if you have a dysfunction with your nervous system.
I wish I could provide answers. I do know how you feel about not getting one problem straightened out until another pops up. I hate to mention anything new to the doctor because I start wondering if it is really possible for someone to keep adding something new and most are things they can't do much for...or am I just crazy!
But, I know that its all very real and that we have to just keep telling our doctors everything. Maybe one day one of us will have a new symptom that will trigger something in our doctors head and set the ball rolling on curing us all. (O.K...I know that is a long shot, but I can at least dream).
Hang in there,
Judy

Hi Kate,

How long were you on the domperidone? Some times it takes a few months. You can take calcium and magnesium for the spasims. If they are bad you might want to try Flexeril. It relaxes muscles withoug the brain fog of Soma. And there are soft muscle relaxers but I don't remember their names. (Bryce again).

I was having back spasims when I took it everyday. I take it about twice a week and also take erythromycin. But I don't take that everyday either. I have diarrhea but did notice constipation when I first cut back on these meds. When I take them, I go and go and go. So I have to plan outings around taking these meds. I tend to go for three days after taking a med.

The domperidone does work for me. I just don't take it everyday.

Hi Kate,

I can only go by what I know about muscle spasms. As a massage therapist. There are so many things that can cause the spasms. The good thing is it doesn't have to be anything bad that is causing the spasms. Are you drinking enough fluids for one.

One of the things that about killed me was that I had gotten so dehydrated that my body locked up with spasm so badly and my potassium levels dropped so badly that I never realized how close I had come to dieing from my GP. Not including the malnutrition.

Do you have Fibromyalgia? That is another problem that will make your body spasm all the time as well.

I think we have all gotten so in-tune with our bodies that we notice every single thing that our bodies are going through and I find myself getting paranoid with anything that my bodies does anymore that I feel is out of the norm.

I am glad that you got off the Domperidone since you are having so many problems with it. As I found out when I was in the hospital that it is a base off of Reglan so I am allergic to both of the drugs.

I am still taking the Mosapride, Some days I think it is helping and other days I don't, but one thing I do know is that I don't have the terrible pain as chronic as I was having since I have been taking it. I will stay on it for a couple more months then my GI said he would decide if I should just stop it.

I was reading about another motility drug called Itopride also a stem off Cisapride/Mosapride. But like Mospride has no bad side effects and has never caused death like the Cisapride has.

I am getting my Mosapride from Canada. I know that if you are spasming alot use moist heat to help relax the muscles or take a bath. There is never a day that doesn't go by that my body doesn't spasm.

One muscle relaxer is called Soma and there is flexeril. But take caution as they will constipate you more. But can be affective.

I hope you can look at all the aspects of possibilties and not just bad ones. I like you hate always being in fear of all the different things that have happened to our bodies. But you should for sure talk to your doctor about it.

Big hugs,

Whispper

I just want to say thank you to everyone who responded. Although I hate to talk to my doctor about another problem, I think I will have to. I do have a neurologist, but I don't see her very often (I see her for a strange neuropathy I developed- it's seemingly benign and not too horribly uncomfortable most of the time- just another oddity...). Anyway, it's hard to get appointments with her, but I think I will try. I definitely want to rule out any additional issues if I can (although I'm still hoping the spasms will subside on their own and it's just taking longer than my GI doctor thought it would after stopping the medication).

Anyway, thanks again for the feedback. If I learn anything, I'll write again.

Hope you guys are doing alright today.

Kate
