Mayo Clinic Advice

0 Recommendations

Hi Everyone!

I am pretty excited that after what seems like forever my general doc got an earlier appointment for me at Mayo. I will be going on June 26! I still have an October appointment at Kansas City that I am keeping for now, but I hope to be able to cancel it because Mayo is able to help. I would like advice from any of you that have gone to Mayo for GP. I know they are good at what they do, but I also have found that if I am prepared and educated about what is going to happen that my appointments are more productive. Is there anything I should ask for i.e. tests, procedures, etc? Is there anything I should know that will make my experience better? Are there any docs that you think are better than others? Does anyone have experience with Dr. Szarka? I don't know what to ask so anything you have to tell me would be great!

Thanks,
Amy

Amy,
Which Mayo are you going too? I can provide some answers about Rochester. I'm glad you are getting in so much sooner than you can in Kansas City.
One thing I would tell you about your visit...tell the doctor about everything...no matter how insignificant you may think it is...I have found out that even if I have been told there is no connection in the past or think it myself that Mayo has a different outlook.
I'll be happy to answer any question you might have if I can.

I am going to Rochester.

I know that I have been to rochester many of times and it is a great place to be beacuse they are there to help you any way they can. I have felt very confident in what they are telling me. One thing that supprised me was that they work as a team and so you may end up seeing more than one doctor at a time but they are all working to do what is best for the patient. I hope this helped ease your mind and good luck may this be a good experience for you

I have been to Mayo several times. They diagnosed my GP in 2002. Unfortunately they didn't do much more for me than diagnosis when I was there. They felt my symptoms were primarily IBS. Now I know I have severe GP and small bowel dysmotility which were probably the problem then as well. I was a bit disappointed as I felt they didn't really give me any options. I am getting very good care from my GI doc here now so I don't really see any reason to go back right now.

That said, I do know that they take a good approach to patient care and work as a team. Make sure you explain all your symtoms thoroughly. Since you already have the GP diagnosis they should be better at helping you then they did for me. I have considered going back, but it is not a priority for me at this time, especially since I had so much trouble the last time I was there.

I don't think my experience is typical. Good luck to you and I hope you find more answers than I did when I was there.

Jen,
I don't think your experience was typical either. When I first went up in 2001, the first test they did was a gastric emptying scan. After getting that diagnoses, it lead to test for other symptoms and trying to find the common links. The team approach is really great too.
I'm sorry they weren't able to be more help to you!
My primary care doctor and the GI doctor at Mayo have been then only ones that have worked really hard to help me. The GI doctors around here, pretty much try Reglan and when that doesn't work or you can't take it because of side effects, will just tell you that you have to live with it.
I'm glad you were able to find a GI doctor that is trying to help now.
