Hospital Locations for Gastric Pacemaker Surgery?

0 Recommendations

We live in Virginia and my son has had Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome for over 10 years and is now being encouraged to have a gastric pacemaker put in for his illness. We have been told he needs to go to Texas for this surgery. Is anyone aware of a doctor that does this surgery on the East Coast?

I found a hospital in NY by doing a google search. Don't know a lick about surgical stats or anything, but here is the website to contact them

Hope it helps

I think you can go to the Medtronic website: http://www.medtronic.com/your-health/gastroparesis/device/our-gastroparesis -product/enterra-neurostimulator/index.htm and there is a place to click to find a doctor who does the procedure which will give you the states and the locations. They will also send you a packet of information in the mail if you request it.

Mississippi has a good one. I think it is at temple university. Our doctor in montana is trying to get us down there but they are booked 60 days out. When we were at Mayo, the head of the gastric unit even mentioned that they have a high success rate. Each facility has different requirements before they will do the pacemaker. Mississippi is very liberal about taking patients. They feel if it helps at all, that is worth putting in. Mayo would not do one for us and transfered us to Virginia Mason in Seattle. Mayo would only do the botox injections even though their website said they do the pacemaker. Our problem is that my daughter is usually near starvation by the time these doctors give us an appointment. Everyone is booked for 30 days and don't seem to care that my daughter is unable to eat and is in no position to wait very long. good luck Pat

Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia is one place.
I had mine done locally (Wilkes-Barre General Hospital) by the only surgeon in this area to do them (Dr. Clark Gerhart).
Good luck and hope it helps!

Dr. Tom Abell is one of the original doctors who worked with the gastric stimulator....he does an endoscopic 2 week trial to make sure you are a good candidate before the permanent one. He is at the university of Mississippi... 1-601-984-4540...
tabell@medicine@umsmed.edu asst. # 1 601-815-4540 I would go there if you could or contact him for information....he works closely with Metronics and will guide you to the right doctor if you don't go to him

I see Pavlos Papasavas at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT.

My daughter had the surgery done by Dr. Cloud. Excellent Dr. and wonderful for followup visits. Good luck.

I had mine implanted in September at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. They have a small program there; I was only the 5th or 6th one they've done but the surgeon, Dr. Swain, is fantastic. There's a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Chand, who does them too and I've heard he's very good and has been doing them for 6 years.

Keep in mind that you might have to have a number of follow up appointments to get the settings adjusted correctly -- I've been back twice since September and I have another appointment in December. That's something I hadn't fully considered before having it done 900 miles from home.
