Gastroparesis and gas

0 Recommendations

Hey,

Does anyone else have problems with severe amounts of gas in stomach/intestines after eating? I have tried all the over the counter probiotics/anti-gas meds, nothing seems to help. I don't think I am swallowing excess amounts of air, never had a problem until the GP. If anybody knows of anything to help it would be great.

GPAllie,

Thanks for the messager suggestion, it's interesting that drinking through a straw helps you keep from swallowing air because I have always been told the other way around, that drinking through a straw contributes to air and gas. Certainly worth a try though. Thanks for the advice!

I've been drinking with a straw. That helps to keep me from swallowing air.

Also, I use a massager that vibrates. I put it in the area of my stomach for 5 minutes. Then when I'm done I usually get a burp or even a few burps.

Good luck,
Allie

Plushy,

I think what you can, and can't eat really depends on your own body. It's going to be different for everybody. My advice would be if you are craving something, listen to your body, try a little bit, and see how it makes you feel. If you are craving fruits/veggies, it could also be that you are dehydrated and craving water. I went through a period where I craved salt like CRAZY! I put tons on EVERYTHING and I used to NEVER EVERY put salt in my food because it always tasted to salty to start with. Turns out, I have chronically low sodium levels ( along with potassium, calcium, chloride, go figure, I thought if one was low the other was supposed to be high) So my body NEEDED that salt. If you crave something and you can eat it without unwanted consequences, by all means eat it! As far as fat content, it really depends on your body. I am very intolerant to it, but others are not. Yes, I believe it would be the total fat content, but depending on how strict your diet is, you should probably try to limit your saturated/trans fat intake and eat more poly/monounsaturated. However, if it's between eating something unhealthy and keeping your weight up, or not eating, eat that junk food! As far as the chocolate craving goes, believe me, I understand! I am HUGE chocolate fan. I would try a little bit and see how it goes, I can't have any but you might be able too. If you can't have the real stuff, try cocoa powder that is lower in fat, or chocolate protein powder. Not the same, but sometimes it's better than nothing. I am having chocolate protein powder at the moment. Spiru-tein brand is not bad. Let us know how it goes.

Best Wishes!

Hi all, I do not know how many grams of fat i can have in any kinds of food, my dr just said i would know what to eat and what not to eat, it seems all i eat is potatoes and the weight is comeing off but not fast at this point. Going to the bathroom is tuff. Has anyone been able to eat choc. i have wanted some but i am afraid to try it. I also do not have any foods i crave like a salad . Is this what i should avoid. I look at all the labels on foods but i am not sure if i look at total fat or what, any advice would be great.

Hey!

I just ordered some iberogast from Amazon.com, now I just have to wait for it to get here. I would love to find something that works as I have tried many things ( and spent a lot of money) and they didn't work. I would LOVE to lose the pregnant look (gets you STRANGE looks when you are 18)

I have had a yeast imbalance before, oral thrush, vaginal, GI and blood stream, very unpleasnt and VERY hard to get rid of. Took IV antifungals many times, am now completely resistant to fluconazole, had to take Caspofungin (nasty stuff, bad rash, yuck) IV for 14 days to get rid of blood stream infection. Despite all kinds of probiotics, it popped up on my skin a month or too back, fun fun, more meds!

Be carefull if you take antibiotics and have a flare of symptoms because it can be do to yeast, most commonly Candida albicans but also by others, important to find out which one because certain herbs/meds are more effective than others depending on type.

Best wishes!

Hi Boxer-
I too will be flying soon and talked to the airline security people about how I can bring my food/liquids etc. They said it helps to bring a letter from your doctor, stating what you have and what you need to take onboard with you to manage your symptoms.

I will be taking a large baggie with ice with the following items: No-fat yogurt pureed with a banana (mid morning snack), 2 cans of tuna, 2 low-fat cheese sticks, low-fat, low fiber crackers, and 1% milk with protein powder for my meals. I only eat one can of tuna and one cheese stick for a meal, but I am taking extra in case the planes are delayed. I am also taking liquids to keep my bowels going. Have a good trip!

If you do Mirilax, experiment with the amount til you find what's right for you. My GI says it's safe to stay on long term (life even) - despite the fact that bottle says not for long term use. He said that he has patients that take 4 capfuls a day and some that take 1/2 a cap every three days. My take varies. Mostly its 1/2 cap every other day. Right now I'm having mornings of horrible cramps and diarrhea and all day loose stools so I'm not taking it. I'd rather have the loose stools than the constipation & gas though - if I could just shed the cramps. My back & side muscles ache even now & the cramps stopped around noon, today.

The prune juice formula will make you gassy AT FIRST (it is basically water soluble "safe" fiber - the aloe cancels out the "bad" fiber side effects), but this should clear up in one to two weeks.

Try one dose two hours before bed to begin with, then add in the second dose. Or, divide one dose between morning and evening, which is how I started out. There is a period of adjustment whenever you are changing your diet.

Iberogast is an over-the-counter (prescription in Europe, though) herbal emulsion that has had successful clinical trials for dyspepsia (GP is included in this definition), gas, bloating, and IBS problems (an internet search will find more information about the trials). It mostly works on the lower bowels, so it won't do much for nausea.

It may take about a week for you to get the full effects, but I noticed an improvement after three days; I lost the "five months preggers" look! A week later, my gas was much less obvious (though still somewhat present - didn't smell as foul...too much information, I know).

GERDS is often a bothering symptom of GP. Did you notice that when you have a gas issue that your stomach seems to gurgle a lot? This can be cause by being lactose or gluten intolerant… But it can also be cause by something that most of us tend to either be ignorant of or ignore. The reality is that people with GP have problems digesting their food, liquid or other wise. The longer that our food sits in our stomach and does nothing the more likely that our food will begin to ferment … To be blunt , ROT!!!!
The simple truth is, that the most common element we all have in our stomach and small intestine that is necessary for fermentation is YEAST! As women understand the simple consequence from a yeast infection.. What we often do not know is that the same kind of yeast that cause women to have yeast inflection in their virginal is not the same kind of yeast that cause people to develop was is commonly known as Candida. Yeast is as vital for digestion as enzymes are. Candida happens when the balance between the good bacteria and bad bacteria ( yeast ) necessary for digestive health is out of whack. This imbalance can and often is cause my antibiotics , toxic medication, food allergies and to much sugar intake. When this happens, gas is one of the first symptoms… Then you will experience stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhea as you body tries its best to get rid of the fermented food that is still in your system…That is one of the main reasons that we need to take probiotics daily, to help balance this issue. Or deal with the reality of chronic gas every time we eat….

Enzymes are also vital, because people with GP have problems creating their own. With out enzymes our food will not digest.

No , I haven't had any tests but the gastric emptying study last fall. The doctors around here are no help. I am thinking of trying a new doctor and maybe going up to the University of Iowa for testing. I only take one capful a day of myralax.

Yes, I seem to get more gas when I take the myralax, but the gas is better then not going to the bathroom for a few wks, then when you do it hurts and isn't very much.
Amitiza doesn't seem to cause gas. It's a pill you take. When food/nutrition goes from your small intestine into your colon it is mainly a liquid. So the colon pulls the liquid out of the colon to produce solid stool. All the Amitiza does is cause the colon to keep more water in it keeping the stool softer. It is a prescription and does need to be controlled by your Dr. Amitiza has never given me diareaha, but the Dr. did warn that if the dose is too high it can cause loose stools.

I have taken Miralax and it does tend to make me gassy and bloat as well. However, i'm never sure whether the Miralax is actually the problem or not. If you are having diarrhea then I would say you are taking to much, are you taking just a capfull or more? I understand perfectly about the bloating, I bloat so bad it is hard to breathe, especially at night. I agree, it's great to find someone with the same problem. I always thought it was just me, especially since I always seem to have a hard time getting rid of the gas, as when I do, it always seems like there is more to take its place. Have you been tested for small bowel bacterial overgrowth syndrome? Its something I have battled extensively and can cause a lot of gas. It also seems to go along with GP.

I am also on Myralax, and it seems to make me more gassy. I have to take it every morning or I will not go to the bathroom for days. One time I didn't go for almost 10 days. My stomach bloats out and it's real uncomfortable. Does the Myralax work for you? How much do you take? I am afraid of taking to much because I get diaherria.

It is so nice to see others with my problems

I have the same problem, and the doctor that I saw for this wasn't any help. I get gas stuck in my body, and it seems like it's for days. I also, won't go to the bathroom for weeks sometimes. I would be interested to know if anyone has the solution for this.

Boxer,

As far as the trip, Luna (same Luna as Luna bars for women) makes something called a sport recovery drink powder that you can get in single serving packets. It has 8 gram protein and only 1 of fiber. It is also chock full of vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, etc. Tastes pretty good too, at least the dark chocolate does, its the only one I have tried. It says you can mix with water, I usually mix with soymilk for more protein. You can buy it through amazon.com or lunabar.com as well. Its especially good mixed with some PB2, defatted, powdered peanut butter and retains protein content without much fat or fiber. Best of luck!

I also have severe consipation due to my GP. I am on Amitiza, which is a prescription from your Dr. that helps your body pull more water into your colon and soften your stools. I am also on Myralax. Then a few months ago my GI Dr. had me start mixing Benefiber and putting it through my J-Tube because my diet is so low in fiber. Benefiber is non bulking so it doesn't clog the tube. Granted they have me flush with a syringe of water and then a syringe of coke after the Benefiber, but we have had no problems with the tube clogging. This isn't the perfect answer, but it has helped some, and the Benefiber keeps me from getting diareah from the other meds, but doesn't constipate me worse. Even though the myralax and benefiber are OTC they are all completely controlled by my GI Dr. so I would talk to your Dr. before trying them.
There is also a study on the effects of Pyrostigmine on constipation. I did the study last fall and it seemed to help, but I had to stop the drug when I had my tube placed in Dec 2008, and because it was a study drug I was unable to restart it until I go back up to Mayo Clinic, but it is something to keep in mind and maybe talk to your Dr. about. When I was taking the Pyrostigmine I didn't need the Myralax anymore which was nice.
Good luck. I hope you find something that works for you

Well, I just went for a long walk last night with my guy and "tooted" all the way home! The more I "tooted" the faster I walked! It turned out to be a great workout! (smile)
I know. It's awful. Between the uncontrollable belching (which sounds like 1/2 hiccup, 1/2 burp) and "tooting" I feel sooo sexy! :)
For me, it seems I get more gas and pain when I haven't had gone to the bathroom for a few days ("all smoke and no fire"!). It's just one more reason to remove your bowels at least every other day - something that's a challenge for me. I tried drinking the prune juice/aloe vera juice/water cocktail twice a day that was recommended, but unfortunately it didn't work and seemed to cause much more gas and bloating (anyone else have this problem?). I finally had to break down and have 2 CleanseMore (by Renew Life) pills which did the trick again this morning. I highly recommend this product but still looking for options since it says on the label "not for prolonged use". I now exercise every day which helps but still having problems.

Hey Einstein-
I too deal with a lot of gas and my theory is that it's all part of having GP since the food sits longer in our stomachs. As for remedies? I try to stay outside as much as possible and let it fly :-)). Unfortunately, I think it was Jo who mentioned it, that slippery elm tea can cause gas. I generally don't get pain as long as I can let it out and the slippery elm tea helps keep my bowels moving, so....I put up with it. And so does my loving husband!!

What is Iberogast? Is it like Gas X? Hope you find something that works for you-Mphotographer

Iberogast helps me with bloating and gas. You can get it at eVitamins.com

I also have problems with gas both in the intestines and in the stomach. I am on a J-Tube, but I still seem to have a lot of air in my stomach and intestines. Occasionally gas-x will help if the air in the intestines gets too bad, but in a "normal" day it doesn't really help. It's embarrasing, but I just spend a lot of time burping and passing gas. If the gas is in your intestines you can try lying on your side and pulling your knees up toward your chest as far as you can. (this is what they suggest you do after a colonoscopy to pass gas and relieve the air that they put in your colon to do the procedure) They say one side is better then the other, but I can't tell you which. I just lay on my side, and if it doesn't seem to help I roll to the other side. This does occasionally help me.
