Gastric output

So, my child has a GJ tube with GP and gets an elemental formula. Does gravity drainage of 800-900 cc of GT output a day seem normal? Seems to be far out of normal range and our doctor said we would have to replace it if it was over 300 in a day. If this happens to anyone out there, what is cause of the increased draining? It is yellow/green and thick.

Hi,
My son is dealing with a similar situation right now. He has a GJ as well (and currently gets 70% of his nutrition through IV). We had increased his j-tube feeds up to about 19 ounces and he crashed this weekend. This was preceeded by increasing amounts of bile (the green stuff) we drained from his g-tube each day. The bile gets dumped into the small intestine from the gall bladder (from the liver) and so when we see a lot of bile in the stomach we know things are getting backed up in the intestines.

800-900cc's does sound like a whole lot. Even 300 is a lot, especially if it's bile. The dietician from our home nursing care company said that anything over 50cc's of bile and you're starting to lose vitamins and electrolytes.

I'm not sure why the gj-tube would have to be replaced if it ends up being a back-up issue. I can see it needing to be replaced if you're seeing the formula from the j-feeds coming out of the stomach because it may indicate that the j-tube has become dislodged and is sitting in the stomach.

All the best to you and your family. Feel free to send me a message directly if you want to talk more. You're all in our prayers.

Adrienne
