Domperidone side effects?

I have been on Domperidone for about 10 years or so. I was in the compassionate use program. I don't remember what the side effects are since it has been so long. Since I already take so much medication for various other things I wonder if anyone could refresh me on the side effects or if anyone could tell me what side effects you have experienced. I would like to know what is causing what and if domperidone is adding to any other problems I am having.

I thank you all in advance for your time and concern,
Loie

Loie,
I only took domperidone for a short time but the side effect that caused me to stop taking it was muscle spasms. I do know others have mentioned the weight gain and lactation.

i take it and have no side effects other than sometimes my prolactin hormone levels are high. but no lactation.

I took Domperidone for about 2 years and didn't have any side effects. However, a couple of months ago my gastroenterologist (a well-known motility specialist) told me he was uncomfortable with my continuing to use it because of potential adverse effects. He said Domperidone should only be taken for a relatively short amount of time. He printed out info for me indicating that there are potential serious cardiac complications, among other problems. That was enough to make me stop taking it, even though it had helped me somewhat.

I took domperidone and it helped a lot, but I had to stop taking it because of side effects. It caused high prolactin levels which led to lactation and amenorrhea. It also caused mood problems (irritability/symptoms of depression) and possibly muscle spasms, although this could have been caused by electrolyte problems, it's not quite clear. I hope this info. helps!

Thank you all for your replies! They are all so very helpful. I am experiencing every side effect listed. I have been tested for each side effect on there and the drs. diagnosis is that I need to seek therapy. Oh well, what else is new. So, there really is a 'reason' for all that I am experiencing!

I will discontinue and see what changes occur. Since I am still having major problems with my digestive tract I am not sure the domperidone is making that much of a difference anyway. I will stop and see which is the lesser of two evils.

Thanks again and God bless you all,
Loie

I have been taking domperidone for a about 2 years. Within a month of starting it, I swore that I would give my right arm for the money to pay for it. (I get it from a compounding pharmacy and it runs about 120.00 a month out of pocket..an pretty empty pocket at that!)

I am at the point where I want to discontinue taking it because I feel that I have had side effects sneak up on me. I have weight gain, muscle pain, depression symptoms, and extreme fatigue. It helped reduce some major pain that I was experiencing so I am afraid to stop it. My plan is to reduce it by one dose a day for a week at a time until I am weaned off of it. My GI Dr. will not be happy, but I just think that it has sucked the life out of me. :(

Turtlegastro, (WHAT A GOOD NAME!)
Your story sounds familiar. I really didn't know what to contribute my symptoms to since I take so many other meds that have adverse side effects. There was a period of time I was in a wheel chair because I couldn't walk without falling plus the pain I was in when I walked.

After reading the responses yesterday, I discontinued the domperidone. I was extremely nausiated by night fall. Your idea of slowly decreasing them sounds more sensible! I was just so anxious to find out if I feel any better.

I just received my order of 1200 two days ago. If I find that the domperidone is causing the problems I would very much like to give them to someone that can use them.

If you are paying $120.00 for a months supply, you are paying way too much. I think I pay about that much for 3 months. I order mine from New Zealand. I can give you the # if you like.

Thanks for the info. Again, I love the name...Perfect!

LL1,
I don't have a specialist at this time. I recently moved to Alabama and haven't been able to find anyone yet. I have a good GP, Dr. Monica Singh. She doesn't really address the Pseudo-obstruction, but she does a great jobwith managing my meds for other health problems. Since I have joined this site I have gotten a lot of info on some meds I am taking. I have decided to discontinue the domperidone on my own since I am having a great deal of abdominal pain, weight gain, nausia and vomiting. I am hoping this will make a difference so when I finally do locate a dr. I will be one step ahead of the game.

Sorry I don't have any name to give you.

It gives me muscle spasims, especially in my back. I only take it when I know I'm too full and sure enough, muscle cramps.

The antibiotic works well for me. I take 1/4 pill every other day.

I still have IBS since having my gall bladder out so I take meds to increase my stomach and slow my intestines.

I have NOT learned how to balance any of this. But was diagnosed with GP in April 08.

I have a lot of autoimmune dieseases and keeping those med levels up have been difficult.

I'm really at a loss.

DolphinRider,
I have wondered about the muscle spasams. I get them pretty bad myself, but not sure what causes them. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but who knows? Could it be the domperidone? Am tapering off if it now to see what changes occur. So far all I have noticed is increased abdominal cramping. I shall prevail! I fully intend to follow this through to see if I am experiencing side effects from this drug.

I also have been told I have an autoimmune problem, but never told what other than from CIP and Cardinoid cancer. What antibiotic do you take?

It really is difficult to strike a balance with any of this,,, the meds, disease, emotions, etc.

What meds are you taking to slow the intestines and increase the stomach?

Since my husband and I are raising 3 very emotionally disturbed grandchildren I have put myself on hold for close to 5 years now. I am completely out of touch with any new meds being used. Need to get as much info as possible.

I appreciate your response and concern. Hope you have a very productive day. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Loie:

Your story sounds so familiar. I was diagnosed with GP three months ago. In my process to find the cause, I started seeing other specialist. I saw a rhumatoligist who diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia as well and provided me with sleeping aids and muscle relaxants so that I could try to get my fatigue under control and "hit the gym". I was somewhat appauled by this suggestion as the reason I can't go to the gym and work out (which recommend for people with signs of FM) is my stomach/GI issues. I decided that treating my FM would be my last attempt at solving my GI issues. I am on domperidone and although this has helped with many of the symptoms including nauceau, the pain in my stomach has not gotten any better. As the doctors as of yesterday, have recommended that I lower the doss as perhaps the Domperidone is causing this reaction. I was on 20 mg 4 times a day. I hope you find some confomfort and that your doctors are slighly more sympathatic than mine have been.

HopePlz,

Thank you for your input. I was born with Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction and wasn't diagnosed until I was 30. So, I went the gammit of uncaring drs myself. Not fun. I find it very difficult to stay sane...and polite... when I have to deal with some of these insensitive drs.

I did find a dr. at Emory Clinic in Atlanta, GA in 1991 who was very caring and understanding. He corresponded with the dr. I had at Mayo for many years. But he no longer treats the entire digestive tract...only the upper part, He is the one that put me in Domperidone. I too take 20mg. 4 times daily. I have gradually cut it down to 10 mg 3 times daily. I am trying to see if it is causing any of the other problems I am having. So far I have not noticed any difference with anything.

I think you need to find a knowledgable dr. Does the one you are seeing now still say you have FM? I am wondering if the domperidone doesn't cause those symptoms. That is one reason I am going to discontinue the domperidone.

Let us know how you are doing. Have a productive day. Take Care,
Loie

Hi I get the domperidone from inhousepharmacy.com. i am so blessed with it but now having issues with weight gain , larger breast size and some insomia but it works so well for me. It costs 190.00 at inhouse for 1800 pills. I am so broke from having GP that I can only but a little at a time. I belong to a GP yahoo group called international gastroperesis support and it saved my life. I get a lot of info on GP from them and this group seems awesome and up to date on their info so thanks all. Would like to meet a live person in my area who actually has this awful disease. Rae from NY state

Rae,

There are a lot of people on here that have weight gain which I always found/find strange since we eat so little. Then there are others that have terrible problems gaining weight. But since I have reread this, I wonder if the majority of the weight could be from the domperidone.

I did try to decrease the Domperidone but I was throwing up all the time and got a bezoar during that time. I have to assume that would be the reason. ?

My original GI gave me many names of places to get the Domperidone. Believe me...we checked around. We found that New Zealand is the cheapest, by far.

I hope you find someone that lives near you. I think you will because I noticed there are many on here that live in that area.
