Does Phenergan totally knock you out?

So I have to leave for my GI in about 5-10 minutes but whoa do I feel like a ZOMBIE. I took 25MGs of Phenergan at about 6pm yesterday and it's now just after 11am and I am still soo exhausted. I hate that it makes me cranky too while my dad is here with me but WHOA. I can't function on this med. And I haven't eaten in a couple of days now. Though I managed to drink a bit. The hospital kept bringing me meat based broths anyhow and I was sick on water but they weren't helping me. Since I've been home I had some of a vitamin water and then I've been passed out.

Does Phenergan do this to everyone? Because oh my gosh. I've never had a med cause such a lasting sleepiness. WOW.

The only time I've taken phenergren has either been in the middle of a horrible episode when I would give anything to pass out, or IV at the ER or clinic or with a demeral or morphine shot to stop the vomiting it causes. So I've never been in a position to have to do anything after taking it but sleep.

Benedryl gives me a horrible hang-over the next day. Yes, it helps me sleep, but I feel so awful the next day (tired and headachy) that I might as well stay up all night.

Yes, it knocks me out and makes my limbs SOO heavy. If I try to stay awake, I am virtually useless. Then again I useless when nauseaous, too. It's a pick your evil kind of game! I take Zofran, too, for a break in the sleepiness but it gives me headaches so I limit it. I don't know that I would ever open my mouth for anything if I wasn't taking Phenergen. Maybe the effects are lasting a long time because your system is worn out? Maybe you needed the extra rest? Feel better and enjoy the naps! Jessica

I think Jessica might have a point. How could you possibly NOT be worn out? I just want to bring you home, put you on my couch with an insipid lifetime movie on TV and my kitties on your lap, and feed you some soup. Since you are a vegetarian I'll make the broth from wakame instead of chicken. You do need some rest, and also some peace of mind would go a long way towards helping you feel better!
*hugs*

Even half of what you took would make me out of it for a whole day. And to think the dosage for nausea in pregnant women is 25-50mg.

Agreed, hon, just sleep. But as to your question? Phenergan is what was given to me as anesthesia when I had my wisdom teeth removed. It's just that effective of a knock-out drug.

Phenergan is pretty much the only anti-nausea med that works for me so I take 50mg at least once a day if not more. It makes me tired but not sleepy or druged.

My GI just told me not to take it anymore. It didn't seem to do much for my nausea and i woke up a few hours after taking it to pop a Zofran. I HATE that I was so worn out and dead that I could hardly talk to my GI. So aftr I left I remembered a zillion things I forgot to tell her. And I was angry. She said stick with my safe foods and try to drink. But if Iw as still such a zombie 16 hours after taking Phenergan, don't take it. I kind of really hate my GI but it's not her fault I was in such a drugged out haze when I got to her office.

I think my mega sinus drainage is a huge part of my nausea problem but who knows. I forgot to address that with the doctor. I'll call my allergist eventually. But my GI is pretty lost on me.

I wish my mommy was here. I can't stand my dad and he's so helpless. I might as well ahve been driving us today even as out of it as I am. It scares me how drugged up I am from the Phenergan and I don't want to sleep. And now I'm in pain but I didn't really bring that up to my GI though she's aware of it.

I have to get another abdominal CT. Last CT showed colon inflammation but two weeks alter I ahd a totally normal colonoscopy so she says unless this new CT comes out clear I may need tot alk to a surgeon for exploratory surgery. Ugh. And I need the small bowel follow through. Both ehr and my motility specialist are demanding it but I dread drinking barium.

Meanwhile I ahd my dad as cheap of an annoying man as he is stop at Whole Foods where I ahd to buy my own rice chips and GF pretzels because he's "too poor" and I mean I have no income. But knock on wood, I am eating rice chips. They are one of my safest safe foods. I wish my mom could come stay with me. If she won't I can't stand my dad and half way considering going home for awhile but my poor cat can't stand to be alone long. And I can't stand being in my parents house really.

But I never want to take another Phenergan. I don't feel like myself and I feel kind of hopeless and I honestly don't want to sleep though I know I will have to nap. I should really make an appointment with my allergist though. ALl my sinus drainage seems to be a bgi problem. I may be managing the rice chips right now because I ahd Zofran an hour ago and because my nose is running for once instead of everything running down my throat. But I don't feel like me and I am cranky. I woke up at one point last night and accidently went off at a friend of mine on Facebook. I didn't even realize I sounded so rude. So no more of this, I think. Unless it has mega lasting effects an that's how I am managing to eat. Honestly I'm more sick on liquids anyway so eatign some solids may be my own individual answer. I am starving.

I just want my mommy though. I all out want to escape myself, I feel so bad. And now I hurt so what fun. I am too tired to do anything. The lost and foudn at the hospital caleld me while I was waiting for the doctor and I'm too tired to call them back. But the hospital lost close to $150 worth of my clothes... Ugh.

I would give anything to be normal and healthy again.

I THINK WHEN IT COMES TO MOTILITY WE ARE OFTEN HAVING TO PICK OUR EVIL. I KNOW A LARGE PART OF MY TIREDNESS IS BECAUSE OF THE MEDS. I HAVE MY NAUSEA COCKTAIL WHICH INCLUDES, VISTERAL (50 MG 8 DAILY), TIGAN (300 MG 4 DAILY), BENADRYL (25 MG 6-9 DAILY) ATIVAN 2 MG 4 A DAY (2 ARE USED AT BEDTIME TO HELP WITH INSOMNIA). I ALSO HAVE PHENERGAN 25MG I CAN TAKE UP TO 6--BUT I TRY NOT USING IT DURING THE DAY (MAINLY BECAUSE I WANT TO HAVE SOMETHING WHEN THINGS ARE BAD AND THEY MAKE MY EYES EXTREMELY BLURRY -- I TAKE 2 AT BEDTIME) BUT IT AT LEAST KEEPS MY NAUSEA TOLERABLE. IT ALSO CUT BACK ON VOMMITTING-) BUT I WOULD RATHER BE TIRED THAN HAVE UNCONTROLLABLE NAUSEA. AND THEN THERE IS THE PAIN MEDS. I CAN TAKE 325MG TYLENOL A DAY, I HAVE THE FENTANYL PATCH AND NORCO IF THE PAIN GETS WORSE. (I ALSO HAVE DONNATOL FOR WHEN MY GUTS DECIDE TO TIE THEMSELVES IN KNOTS, AND HELPS WIT NAUSEA
I KNOW NARCOTICS MAKES MOTILITY EVEN SLOWER. YET WITHOUT MY MEDS I SERIOUSLY THINK MY QUALITY OF LIFE WOULD BE MAJORALLY SUCKY AND REALLY NOT WORTH LIVING SO I HAVE CHOSEN THE EVIL OF MEDS WHICH COMES WITH DROWSINESS, LOSS OF INDEPENDENCE, SLOWER GUTS.
BUT THE RESULTS ARE I'M NOT TOTALLY MISERABLE. NOTHING MAKES IT GO AWAY 100%, BUT I CAN HANDLE IT.
WELL THAT'S MY "EVIL" CHOICES. KELLY

i feel the same way. very drowsy but it does help my nausea. its almost would i rather b nausated or sleepy. sleept wins

Drugs seem to effect everyone a little differently. When I first started taking phenergan it would make me drowsy but soon it quit doing even that unless it was given by injection, now even the injections don't do much either. My doctor had me up to 50 mg every 4 hours at one time and it didn't do anything to make me sleepy or even phase the nausea. But, I seem to be resistant to most medications and it takes huge dosages to even phase me. At one point my doctor had me trying 16 mg of zofran, but since it didn't do anymore than 8 mg, we just went back down to that dosage to save money. Last time I was in the hospital the doctor wanted to sedate me lightly because he was going to open my incision to pack it since it was infected...I had taken 25 mg. of vicodin about 10 minutes before he walked into the room, he then had the nurse give me to dilaudid injections saying that I should be able to take a nice nap...I never went to sleep and only felt slightly drowsy! He was shocked at how resistant my body was to that much medication.
I do know that my family members have had 25 mg. of phenergan for nausea before and they would react like you did and sleep thru one day and most of the next.

I just picked up phenergan today and took one dose (12.5 mg) around 6pm. It's difficult for me to tell whether it knocked me out. I am in extremely fatigue from being sick last week...got double bags under each eye. I can close my eyes any time and be gone. I am planning to just take my 9:30 med and go right to bed. GP sucks! It's so difficult to replenish the energy after being sick simple because we can't eat up to the amount of calories needed! However, I have to say phenergan did help because I was still burping for nothing until I took it. I got two injections in the middle back around the spine today. My physiatrist said they were supposed to help the nausea. I can only say I do feel the muscles loosen up and so did my stomach a little bit and I did not feel as nauseous in the three hours after that...but I was still burping and that means it did not calm down the symptoms of the flare...

I love phenergan through IV. It worked like a miracle for me during stomach flu! That's why I chose it over compazine when GI doctor asked me to choose between these two. She is not a big fan of zofran. She said it did not work for her patients...but I know it has helped many people in the group here...

In terms of food, I would say whatever works for us the GP-ers. I realized I cut corners on the quantity and variety, BUT I am spending money on the quality instead...

Hope you feel better soon! Glad to hear you are at least eating rice chips... ^_^

Just be careful getting phenergan through IVs because it has literally burned several of my veins from the inside out. My GI won't let anyone give it to me anymore unless I've maxed out on everything else but even then it's injected into a muscle instead of it going through my IV.

Yes, it knocks me out. I'm in and out all day on it. I reserve it for a really bad nausea day. I was just given Promethazine gel that is like lotion and you rub it on your wrists, and that doesn't make me tired. Also, I've heard the Promethazine suppositories work and make you tired just right at the beginning, and then goes away.

Phenergan was the first thing prescribed for me when I began having bouts of nausea well over a year ago. It worked well in a small dose of 12.5 mg every six hours and allowed me to function without grogginess. If I took 25 mg. I would be out cold for hours. After 3 or 4 months it stopped working for the nausea and left me with an unbearable sick drowsiness and I was unable to sleep. When the diagnosis of GP was made, I was told to alternate Zofran with Phenergan and it was beyond useless. The only time Phenergan works for me is when it is used to potentiate Demerol for pain which I haven't needed for almost a year.

I'm considering trying to cut a pill in half and taking 12.5 to see if it helps. I've actually managed to eat some today so I'm okay-ish. It's still ahrd and I've got post-hospital anxiety a bit. I just hate that Phenergan rendered my GI appointment totally useless this morning. There was so much I wanted to say but then didn't because I was so out of it. I mean she asked if it helpe the nausea but how on earth would I know when it knocked me out? But I might try half a pill if I really need it. Seems better than making another ER run or something. And I've got the pills so...

I really think I'm going to get in an appointment with my allergist. I know my nausea got bad the same time my allergies flared up and I think some mega sinus drainage is contributing to my nausea issues. I suspect that's why no matter what they give me I feel no better. But I don't know. Seems worth exploring at least. I meant to even ask my GI about it but oops, I was so out of it. But I know I've got a bit of a cough and am sneezing with a runny nose but most of all for over a week now have had really thick drainage down the back of my throat and my allergy meds aren't helping. So maybe the allergist can help me with that aspect. And while I haven't seen my allergist in a very long time he's one doctor I actually really like so I figure couldn't hurt.

But thanks everyone. I've managed to stay awake all day after I got up for my GI appointment and over time I woke up some and felt more like myself. So for sure I've had way worse meds!

KELLY, DO YOU TAKE TITAN INJECTIONS OR ORAL PILLS?

It used to make me sleepy but not any more. I've taken it so frequently for such a long time it doesn't make me feel like that. I only get a tiny bit sleepy when it's given thru the iv.

Sweetie, this whole thing makes me so sad and I wish I could take care of you. :(

Zofran only works for me paired with ativan (which is given alone for nausea, by the way). Together they work great for me.

I just had the Bombay Grunge Sinus Infection from Hell and it made me feel horrible for two weeks. Mine all drained down the back of my throat, not out my nose. That stuff is very irritating to your stomach.

Mainly, though, I think you are just exhausted and that is making everything worse. You know in old movies how people go in for a "rest cure" to some fancy sanitarium in the Swiss Alps overlooking the lake and the patients sit there in wheelchairs covered with a soft blanket on the lawn and the nurse brings them their tea on a silver tray with a rose in a bud vase on it? And then come and get them for their massage or their whirlpool treatment? THAT is what you need!

Wonder if we could get our insurance to pay for that treatment!

OKAY- now on to Real Life.

PLEASE make sure you have the small bowel series before you see a surgeon. It is super-important, because if your issues are small-bowel motility, the last thing you need is someone going in there and causing you a bunch of scar tissue to gum things up even worse. If you are that worried about doing the small bowel series because of the barium, talk to your doctor. I haven't had barium for over ten years. Because of my issues they always use what one tech called the "Nasty Tea". It isn't pleasant but it isn't as awful as the barium, and doesn't plug you up afterwards. Plus you don't have to drink that much of it (not like the gallon of golitely sludge).

Before I had the motility studies, my doctor was going to send me to a surgeon. Instead I went to Stanford for a second opinion (he set it up and referred me). After he got the report from Stanford, now he tells me, "Whatever you do, DON'T let anyone operate on you! If you end up in the ER and they want to do surgery, make sure they talk to me first!"

Feel better Sweetie! Please try to get some good rest. I know how you feel about wanting your mommy- I still want mine when I'm sick, and I'm almost 57, and she's been gone for 17 years!

Just a quick update on phenergan. I did not take it last night...insisted not to because I don't want my body to get used to it and then it stops working...and it was not good for me to stuff up myself with food and get the stomach pain and flare up everything... This morning I woke up with quite a bit of nausea...especially after taking my daily AM meds...I started burping for nothing...I was also going out for brunch with my mom and a friend... Instead of getting nervous, I put a few phenergan in a small bottle to bring with me and grab a tube of the girl scout peanut butter sandwich cookies to munch on the way hoping it was just one of those reactions after taking my meds. Thank God my stomach calmed down after one cookie so I ate another two. I had soft solid food for brunch but for sure did not have the nerve to stuff myself again after two days of jamming my stomach. I am burping a bit and drinking a lot of water. So far I feel ok. I still have not felt the need to grab the bottle of phenergan. I am still far better than the past two weeks although I am burping some. It was amazing that I felt the same way like Tzipora with phenergan. It suppressed the gas and the burping in the stomach and felt like it pushed the food along the track. It induced quite a few healthy bowel movements. I was shocked! But the key is still - GP diet goes on whether the world is turning or the clock is clicking... Oh well, it's good enough that we are still able to do something by mouth...I thank God for that day and night!
