Diet Struggle..

0 Recommendations

Hello everyone, I've been following the diet for GP a few months now and I'm finding that I'm actually gaining weight on this diet. I figure it's because the majority of things i can eat now are sugary and have lots of carbs. I tried balancing out my diet with mushy, well cooked veggies but that didn't go very well. I suffered from extreme stomach cramping, bloating, and other GI problems. Also, I make smoothies with a variety of fruits, which I can handle pretty well. With this new diet I've been noticing that I'm very tired by the afternoon and feel exuasted.
I take a mutli-vitamen everyday and workout a few days a week. I was wondering if anyone had some tips on how to keep the weight off while following this diet? I need some nutritional help..pronto!

I have also been gaining weight with this diet. And you are right about it having so much carbs and sugar. Most of the sugar I get is from fruit juice. I sart my day with a smoothie made with Miralax, soy protien powder, pineapple juice and frozen strawberries. I also have 4 gummy bear vitamins and 3 gummy calcium. It you are using regular vitamin pills they may not be breaking down and absorbing into you body. I noticed a big difference when I started the gummy vitamins. I had not changed a single other thing about my diet so I am pretty certain that they do help. I also try to drink one V8 per day to get my veggies in. Most of the time in the last six months I have had just the smoothie and the V8 or a slimfast and still I have put on some weight. But I do feel so much better then I did for about the last 3 years or so. So I try not to beat myself up about the weight. The hard part is if the clothes are tight I start having more problems. Now I am trying to get more exercise and am hoping to drop the extra 20 pounds slowly. Several times I have tried to reintroduce traditional diet food into my body in hopes of dropping weight. And each time I am in agony for days. Better to be a bit rounded then in terrible pain.
If I force myself to exercise- walk or bike. Even if it is just a few blocks my energy increases.

I am maintaining at above my desired weight--but not gaining anymore, and managed to lose 40 pounds. I balance my food groups and calories in the mornings when I blend my smoothies, make my own almond milk (no sugar), and only get sugar from juices or smoothie bases. I do use real sugar in coffee, since sugar substitutes make me sick.
I use plain yogurt and try to use fat-free products whenever I can.
Some people end up on feeding tubes because they cannot maintain weight. I look at it as a little insurance policy against that time.
My GI said he'd rather see me healthy like this than starving at my ideal weight. So I have given myself permission to stop worrying about it.

I look at it like this, you have a little "jiggle room" as I call it. I gained almost 50 pounds whenI first flaired, and have just started to slowly lose it within the past week or so. I see it as my insurance policy against having to get a tube or a pacemaker for a while. Besides, not everyone should be thin, Be content where you are.

I have gained too. It's the carbs. For the fatigue, I have found that I HAVE to eat some protein daily. If I don't get protein, I am SO fatigued! Can you eat fish? I find that is easier to digest than poultry. Also, eggs are good for protein. Also try Ensure with protein added. (they have different Ensures with different things added). I have 2 Ensures a day.

It's great that you are exercising! Keep it up! Every little bit helps.

Bloating is another issue a lot of us have. You might also be tired in the afternoon because your stomach is full (like how we get so tired after a Thanksgiving meal). Are you taking anything to help your stomach empty faster? I have been taking digestive enzymes (Creon 12,000) for a few months now, and it does work. It helps to break down the food faster. Also be careful not to over-eat. I know for me, I am tempted to finish the last few bites on my plate, even though I am already full. I have learned not to do that, and listen to my stomach!

I have also gained weight, about 25 lbs in 4 months. I have found that 2 oz servings of protein in whatever form you can tolerate spaced at approx 2 hour intervals helps with the fatigue. I make my own chicken, tuna or salmon spreads and put them in 2 oz. containers (like the type they give you for condiments when you eat out). When I'm feeling hungry or tired, I just grab one. I've also found 1 egg or possibly 1/2 peanut butter sandwich helps.

Since raw fruits and veggies make me very uncomfortable (bloating, heartburn, gas, etc.) I usually mix fruit or vegetable juices with equal amounts of water. It allows me to drink more without adding too much acid or sugar, not to mention the calories.

I found two vitamin supplements that I really love. The first is by Irwin Naturals (Living Green Liquigel Multi for women), the second is Floradix calcium/magnesium liquid. Both are very easily assimilated and maybe it's psychological but I definitely don't feel as tired or depressed. They can be found online at Lucky Vitamin.

I have added Ginger capsules to my daily routine as well. They seem to help with digestion and the heartburn.

For the bloating I started taking a generic brand of Gas-X, which has also helped.

I'm looking to incorporate Turmeric into my diet as well. Maybe I can mix it in the chicken spread to add a little flavor and variety.

Anyway, I hope some of this helps. Oh I almost forgot... buy a pair of maternity jeans/pants. They have been a godsend on those days when my belly just won't cooperate!!!

Hi Beachbum, I think its our diet, mainly carbos, when they wear out, so do we. Many of us have celiac issues & autoimmune disease and work through fatigue but we have to walk or do something for exercise or our bodies will athropy. I lost weight initially, now I am like most everyone else gaining slowly and so grateful to be able to eat still. I think it's good to have some weight, because when you hit a bad spell you lose like crazy again. Take care of yourself, and it's so nice to hear from you. Have a wonderful day and enjoy your life, it's not all bad. Sending a Big Hug your way. Gina

P.S. Beachbum, try some protein in your diet, it really helps because it burns slower and no residue. I still can't eat veggies at all, tummy cramps like no other, but I do juices, V8, tomato, carrot, whatever good quality juice I find in glass in health food store works. For protein I will eat deli roasted turkey or chicken, small amts. of cheese. Good luck with your diet and your tummy. You will find what works for you! It just takes time. Hugs Gina

Has anyone thought of Hormones playing in a factor to the weight gain? I know hormones plays apart in gi problems and they play a part in weight gain. I tried to stay on gp diet and cut down carbs and sugar...gained even more weight. I then switched birth controls, because domperidone decided to do something in my liver and cause the birth control I was on to stop working and giving me three periods a month. When I switch to a stronger birth control, I am not as bloated as I use to. I can see my old stomach coming back!! I haven't had pain for a month and a half (since I have switched.) And I am starting to loose weight at a constant rate while getting in my carbs, vegies, fruits, and protiens.
