Did my GP go away?

0 Recommendations

I just go back from Mayo and after much tests it was determined that I don't have GP, I actually have pelvic floor dysfunction. The doctors told me to stop taking the Domperidone, Amitiza and take Milk of Mag and Ducolax for the chronic constipation. How did all of this happen? After nearly 2 yrs of suffering with abdominal pain, difficulty eating and the like, I find out that my stomach is emptying normally. Did my GI doc misdiagnose me or am I getting over the GP? I'm really stumped by all of this. My symptoms are improving after having gone off of the GP meds. I'm not experiencing the upper GI bloating or the pain in my left side. I've lost 6 lbs in 10 days which is good because I've gained 20 lbs since the initial GP diagnosis. I'm eating more normally. The constipation is still an issue but I'm feeling like I'm getting my life back. Anybody else experience this with GP or possible misdiagnosis?

AWESOME! My gastroenterologist has always told me since my diagnosis that the GP can disappear as mysteriously as it came. He just told me that again when I saw him 3 days ago. GP has no apparent rhyme or reason. I'm so happy for you!!!! Hope it stays away!!!

Definitely happy for you. Depending on the reason they thought you had GP in the first place, it can absolutely go away. diana

I am so happy for you. I keep hoping mine will disappear. I hope you get the help you need for your pelvic floor syndrome.

If it was caused by a virus, chances are it did go away. I do hope you continue to have a happy GI tract and good luck with the pelvic floor syndrome.

What fabulous news! Enjoy your good health--it's always so "hopeful" for me when others get better.
Take care of yourself with your new diagnosis, which is still probably worthy of some attention.
I'm so happy for you!

That's great news. Interestingly, my problems were first attributed to pelvic floor syndrome, for which I received biofeedback treatment about two years ago. I was set up to repeat treatment but in the meantime got the GP diagnosis. With meds/diet change, the "pelvic floor" problem cleared up. Is it possible that sometimes they just don't know? I also think it depends on what type of doctor you see, who you're directed to, by whom.

Anyway, good luck with your further treatment. If it's the same as mine, it's easy.

what is pelvic floor?

heppy

The pelvic floor is this group of muscles that help you to move your bowels. When the pelvic floor muscles won't relax you become constipated, bloated and miserable. That's what I've got. The 2 week bowel retraining at Mayo clinic will help me to get these muscles to relax so I can go to the bathroom normally.

Congrats!!! I hope it stays your GI track stays happy :)

Is there a test they do for the pelvic wall to determine that disorder?
I am lucky if I go once a month , I have IBS and GP along with positive anti bodies for Chron's (which I don't think that means anything, because I don't have any lesions on the parts of the CT they can see(also have gastric diversion of the small intestine)

The test that I had at Mayo to diagnose the Pelvic Floor Dysfuntion was called an anorectal manometry test. It tests your ability to evacuate stool. It's rather bizarre in that it involves using sensors and balloons that are inserted in you to see if your rectum, anus and pelvic muscles are working to push the stool out. In my case, I failed the manometry test and that's how they diagnosed the pelvic floor dysfunction. The test wasn't painful just a little embarrasing. You might want to ask your GI doc about this test. It finally answered the questions as to what is going on with me.

Hang in there!

I am so happy for you Annie! Forget the why and just celebrate! I hope that you go on to improve so much that these issues just become a distant memory!

I thought my GP had gone away as I was told it was viral in nature. After my inital dx in Jan 2008 I had a normal gastric study in Sept 2008. Cured I thought! Well a year later, with no vomiting but with symtoms I guess now I was ignoring I ended up back in the hospital with uncontroled vomiting. Since I've been dx with severe ulceration of the distal esphagus, free reflux and a hiatial hernia. To say I'm upset about all this is an understatement. Waiting now for the biospy results. Thanks for letting me share.......

That is great news, Annie. I wish you well and hope you can get back to a normal meal.

Take care
Marie

I'm glad to hear the the biofeedback retraining helped you. I'm just so relieved to know that the GP has gone away or whatever. I can eat like a normal person! Yippee! Thanks for the words of encouragement. Hang in there!

I'm hoping that your GP goes away too! It's such a miserable illness and dealing with the eating issues can be a real nightmare. Keep thinking positive thoughts. I still have to deal with the chronic constipation but I'm hopeful that the biofeedback program will help.

You are one of the folks that kept me laughing thru all of this. I love reading your posts and how you deal with this miserable illness. I'm feeling better and hoping that the biofeedback retraining will help. Just being able to eat more normally really makes a difference in my attitude. I can deal with the constipation know that I've got some hope. Keep your posts coming. You're positive and funny posts have really kept me going!

What's funny about my diagnosis of GP is that I never had the horrible nausea or vomiting just the bloating, heartburn and constipation. The Mayo docs seem to think that my colon was so full and my belly so distended that it was putting pressure on all of my organs. I sure hope it doesn't come back but I'm staying positive and looking forward to more help from Mayo. Hang in there and maybe your symptoms will improve!

I can't vomit. Esophagus does not have full motility. I would love to wake up and have this gone, but I am much happier where I am now--managed--compared to two years ago--on the IBS diet, depressed, and in chronic pain.
I think it's more in the perspective a person puts on their reality than the reality itself. You have to fall all the way down the ladder to be happy that you are holding on halfway up.
Otherwise, you just keep staring at the top, wondering why you can't climb as high as everyone else.

Wow! No more GP? That's wonderful, Annie! What doctor did you see at the Mayo and what location?

SueBee -
I saw Drs. Rao and Camilleri. I spent quite abit of time with them and they were very informative and very matter of fact that I don't have GP. I was so stunned by the diagnosis that I didn't think to ask them if it just went away or if it was possible that I never had GP in the first place. I went to the Mayo clinic in Minnesota. It's a great place and the staff is so professional and caring!
