burning in neck and chest and a dilemma!

0 Recommendations

So, my rx for aciphex ran out. My original plan was to take prilosec OTC when needed, or zantac. However, right when the aciphex ran out, my period was ending, (its over now) and I have had a burning sensation on the right side of my neck (right above the collarbone) that sometimes radiates to the back of my neck on that side, and a little bit to the chest. I really do not know what to do.

When all this crap started, I was having debilitating nausea which *knock on wood* I still get, but has gotten somewhat better. Today I had a few seconds where I felt like throwing up, and I don't feel like eating as much, but I am SCARED about this burning. But when all this started, my GI rxed aciphex b/c the OTC prilosec was not working on my nausea, and I had thought at that time, "but I do not have heartburn". Looking back on it now, although its not what cuased me to go to the dr, I did get it somewhat. So they rxed me aciphex. So here is what I am thinking....

I have heard going off PPIs can give you bad symptoms. At the same time, I honestly do not want to get horribly bad again. The last 2 days the buring has been pretty bad. Its also making me very depressed again, b.,c I am afraid its going to bring back my horrible symptoms. My friend who has severe GERD told me I need to call my GI and get my aciphex refilled like yesterday. My husband wants me to see if I can try to go without it. But in the end, no matter what I do, I am TERRIFIED.

B/c things were so bad for me last winter, I always feel freaked out whenever I get anything stomach related. I am so scared. Is heartburn really worse when you stop PPIs, or should I just get back on aciphex. Oh, and why doesn't generic prilosec work for me?

Love,

Lauren

You could be having rebound. I also think that being stressed and scared is not helping (but how do you make that go away?).

I took prilosec for 5 weeks. To my knowledge, I didn't have an acid problem. The GI doctor thought it would help with my stomach pain. After I started, I tried to skip a night and felt a burning sensation in the back of my throat. I got scared and went back on it and my GI doc said "see, that means u need it". But 5 weeks later, my new doc said, you don't need it just stop taking it. So, i got a grip (controlled my anxiety), relaxed and stopped. I mixed up some apple cider vinegar in water (2 tsp to 16 ounces) and sipped on it to help control any acid like symptoms (see earthclinic.com). I'm now off PPI meds and thankful.

I hope you find something that takes away your pain. Remember that the symptoms of too much acid, not enough acid and even just the right amount of acid are all the same. So, you really may not need the acid meds, but you need to make that determination. Try to meditate and relax...being scared is so difficult--i've been there times a thousand.

Feel better and write back if you need more support.

I would suggest you get your rx refilled or try an over the counter like Prilosec, see if the pains subside. I take protonix and recently ran out, had the same symptoms. I agree that apple cider vinegar is great for soooo many things, I take it, also. Our bodies are infinely made and all has to be in order...physically, mentally and spirtually. I hope you get to feeling better.

I suffered a long time with the same symptoms you describe. My home remedy helped tremendously. Put 1/2tsp of baking soda and 1/2 teasp. salt in a glass. Add 16 oz soda of any kind and stir it up and drink it. Its like alkaselzer and has worked amazingly well for me. You may burp a lot but then you will feel better. Check with your doctor first.

I'll have to try those remedies! I'm trying to figure out if I need the aciphex 2x a day still. I don't think I do but when I try to not take it I get nervous!! I too can understand how scared you get when there's anything going on with your throat and belly. Maybe I just need more Xanax........ ;)

The pain you are experiencing very well could be reflux. Acid is a very bad thing and can lead to esophageal erosion or cancer so keeping it under control is a must. OTC Prilosec at the strength "allowed" without a prescription is far inferior to Aciphex or any other prescription PPI. Our hospital has "conversions" of OTC Prilosec to the other PPIs and the doses are quite high. My opinion would be to have your Aciphex refilled asap.

I'd have the Aciphex refilled ASAP. I take two nexium & 1-2 Zantac a day. Occasionally I can get down to just the nexium. Given that untreated acid reflux/GERD, besides causing pain beyond belief, can cause Barrett's esophagus & esophageal cancer (not a high cure rate for that one), I'm okay with taking the stuff for life. Not something to play with.
