Are Motility Doctors really better than normal GI doctors for GP?

0 Recommendations

I looked up a motility doctor (theres not very many, not in every state even) and my doc even mentioned this other place and I'm going to go, but are they going to help me more than my other GI docs. My doc now said they are the ones that do the pacemaker, so does that mean that normal GI doctors can't do the pacemaker only the motility ones can? Or was it just the place I went to?

I did not know they existed. What is the difference in their credentials? Are they specialized specialists? More of a nutritionist? Are they considered full staff members, or do they consult with other specialists? I know GI's here do the pacemaker. I think you are looking for an excellent surgeon at that point. But what do I know? There are so many sub-specialists, I feel like I should be able to service the various parts of my body by mail-order.
Done complaining now. Let me know if you learn anything useful. Good luck!

yes there are motility doctors, they're gi docs still but they specialize in motility go to www.digestivedisstress.com there you can find a list of motility doctors in your state (although they're not in every state) on that website you will also find letters you can mail to congress so that our research center for gp wont get shut down. hope this was useful.

Thank you. Did not mean to sound sarcastic, but the doctors are overwhelming! I think I will stay with the one I have for now. He's done very well by me. However, if I need to, I can always see what's out there. Good luck to you!

I go to a motility doctor at University of Michigan and see my GI doctor in my hometown. They are both wonderful, but at the U of M they have more access to equipment and testing procedures that the local doctor does not have.

I am glad I see both of them.

From what I know motility doctors are supposed to be better for GP than GIs because GP is a motility disorder and that is their specialty (motility of the entire digestive track). So among other things they will have actually heard of & treated the symptoms you have and are aware of more cutting edge treatments. But they're hard to find. A friend's sister who was just diagnosed with the throwing up sort of GP (& who has multiple other problems so that she is in & out of the hospitals in Albany NY, NYC, & Boston) was just referred to a motility doctor in Maryland.

It's very hard to find motility doctors. Usually they are at big institutions in large cities. I went to two motility doctors at the Mayo Clinic and they were great. But I'm managed by my GI doctor who is not a motility expert, though he always seeks out advice from various motility doctors regarding my case. He has been great for me and I really feel comfortable with him.

Thanks so much everyone. You're so helpful! I found my docotor on www.digestivedisstress.com There's a list of motility doctors, that's how I found mine. You're right they are really hard to find, and they're not in every state. You have to do your own homework. I have an appt. on monday (as long as the medical records get to them in time)

I found a GI Motility Clinic at our local university and have a first appointment this week.

My regular GI doctor is nice but I don't find her helpful with GP. She knew that Reglan and Domperidone were the treatments she could offer but she had nothing to comment on even after I provided Doctor Bernstein's Diabetes solution book, Chapter 22 on GP which has numerous suggestions including digestive enzymes like papaya enzymes...which my doctor said "I never heard of papaya seeds." Good grief, I need someone that's going to think outside of the standard "throw a pharmaceutical to the patient and send her home" kind of mentality.

Will keep posting regarding the motility specialist.
