A doctor admits

I don't know if anyone out there has the same problem. My GI doctor got the results from Mayo and found out my large bowel and colon were the problem. When I had pelvic surgery the dr accidentally cut the nerves to my large intestine. He then told me a j- tube would probably still give me the same problem.I still wouldn't be able to evacuate. He then told me the surgery of taking out the large bowel and colon and attaching the small bowel to the rectum was a 50-50 shot. Not very good odds.I still would rather take a shot at the j tube as I think liquids that didn't have to travel so far would be a better chance. He is trying to get my insurance to let me go back to Mayo and get a GI doctor more familiar with this and get further tests that Mayo recommended .I don't know what choice to make as he said it doesn't look like I have many.Anybody out there who has any suggestions I am open to hear. Please let me know Jeannine

No I an not over 65 but I do have state insurance since this all started.Ineeded a prior authorization for Mayo and now need a new one.even with medicare or whatever insurance you have if they don't approve it,and you or your doc tell them they will be sued for denying you treatment you can't get any where else they will definitely change their tune if they say no file an appeal.I was in the medical field for a long time and am currently studying law from home on the internet as I can't go on campus right now.Technically if you or your doc mention they are denying you your civil rights they sing a different tune and if there is only one hospital that can help you and as we all no this situation can mean the difference between life and death. Now my doc says if they take out my large bowel and intestine and connect the small intestine to the rectum it is 50-50.I am hoping mayo has better odds.If you don't mind as you are the third person this happened to after surgery.Believe me how I know this is no way to live.Best if Luck Jeannine

If you don't mind my asking what type of abdominal surgery did you have as you are the 3rd person with our problem due to surgery.I understand if you don't wish to say. I was a very private person when this all started .Now I feel like I have lost all dignity having things stuck everywhere. No quality of life.

I have had problems due to Surgeon making a mistake by cutting the Vagus nerve thus causing no end of problems eating , after 5 lots of open surgery , catching MRSA and other problems , and now I have been referd to another consultant as the one who made the mistake is saying there is nothing he can do,and my quality of life is not good. so I can understand how you are feeling and despair in what future holds.

i HAD A COLECTOMY WITH SMALL BOWEL RESECTION AND HAVE BEEN WORSE EVER SINCE SO THE 50-50 AREN'T GREAT ODDS, I HAVE NEVER BEEN THE SAME THAT WAS BACK IN 2002. MY SURGEON TOLD ME I'D BE 100% BETTER PROVIDING NO COMPLICATIONS, 1ST WEEK OBSTRUCTION, OUT OF SURGERY 1 WEEK LEFT HOSPITAL FOR 1 DAY WAS BACK THE NEXT WITH THE OBSTRUCTION, HAVE HAD CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIONS EVER SINCE ALONG WITH GASTROPARESIS AND DISMOTILITY OF SMALL BOWEL, THEY WANT TO DO THE J TUBE ON ME, I SAID NO TPN 4X = 4 MAJOR BACTERIAL INFECTIONS SO NO OPTION THERE EITHER. HOPE I HELP ANY QUES JUST ASK

Thank-You for your info.I don't see the surgeon until the 20th for the j tube.I went to another surgeon and it was like he wanted to do that major surgery.I feel like i am a piece in a factory getting passed around and around not a human being with feelings.

hello..my father had gallstones/gallbladder removed, but the surgeon gut his common bile duct and he had to reconnect what he cut to his sm intestine. my father ended up in the hospital for 3 months. during that time he ended up with MRSA, ascites(lg stomach), tubes everwhere. he too lost his quality of life/dignity. when he finally was discharged, he had a j-gtube to eat. he was still have nausea/vomitting. couldn't tolerate eating. since sept till march we have had 12 RE-ADMISSION. our lives have changed forever.
that surgeon who made the mistake was AWFUL he didn't have good bedside manners. we didn't feel he was sorrow for what he had done to our family. what is super sad is my dad is over 65( he just retired 4yrs ago just starting to enjoy his retirement) and he will not get the full compensation of a younger man. we took legal action, but here in CALIF all a person who can get for pain and supper (coz he is over 65) is 250,000. that is NOTHING for what he has gone through. right now he gets TPN (IV nutrition every night). i think/hope he is getting better, he is able to eat sm meals without feeling nausea/vomitting. after all this is developed REFLUX. so far so good he is gaining wt, his lost he got was 115lbs (before his initial surgery he was 180lbs). but for my family i see the light under the tunnel....we still have to work on his depression. that is what is killing my mother. i told my mom, dad will not be the same person from before. this MISTAKE has changed his life and OUR families life.

i have asked many people on this site about what/how they got GP/motility problems, alot of them say they developed it after abd surgery.

God Bless your dad it is very hard to have everything taken away from you so fast especially when you finally retire. The doctor who did this to me never came back in my room even though at the time I thought he only put a small hole in my bladder. When I was being wheeled to the car outside the hospital I saw him he said I never should have touched you. That should have been a clue to me but I thought he meant because he cut the bowel.

ctownchic,

My heart goes out to you. I have had GP since Aug of 2007 but think the problem actually began in 2007 when a surgeon "nicked" my colon. I have had many obstructions and resections along with hernias since this time. The surgeon had no remorse.

It feels like the 8 yr nightmare.

I pray that your appointment goes well.

I read the surgical notes he was an ob gyn he said he was removing adhesions from the bowel and colon. The doctor who did the repair work told me the retractors accidentally slipped.Honesty would have helped getting a GI doctor involved sooner

Have you looked into taking legal action? I am just curious. I would think that an OB-GYN would be out of his scope of practice removing adhesions from non-girly parts? An an accidental slip of the retractors seems to be careless since they work with retractors all the time.

I did end up getting an attorney as he never once came to my room after surgery to say I am sorry for cutting your bladder and you needing 2 transfusions I had no idea he had did all that damage or that the retractors had slipped or getting get 2 transfusions until I followed up with the urologist who fixed my bladder. Thanks for writing Jeannine

Ctown: Any news on doc visits? I'm curious-did the dr., say how the slipped retractors caused the dysmotlity. Charlotte: Did they say anything in your case how a nicked colon could have caused the GP?

deb1,

The problem is no one ever says anything. I have had problems since this surgery and they just continue. The state of TN has a statue of limitation of 1 yr. At that point I was still fighting to live.

Thanks,

Charlotte

I also got GP after surgery (Nissen Fundo) Anyway, the surgeon that did it admitts that he had to have done the damage to the vagus nerve. He has been very nice and feels bad, but I still feel like I have no chance but to sue. I am 27 and it seems as though I will have medical bills from this GP for the rest of my life. I went to a specialist in Chicago, and the other day I got a copy of the letter that he wrote to my original surgeon from my original surgeon! I thought this was weird, but I asked for anything he had received and he gave it to me. There are two letters form the doc in Chicago that states that in his opinion my vagus nerve was damaged during the Nissen Fundoplication by my surgeon. I don't feel good about sueing my doc, because I am not looking to get rich off of this, but I need help with medical bills and bills that I have been unable to pay since I have not been working. Any thoughts?

Amy
