8 months baby hospitalization - Short Gut - no ileo-cecal valve

0 Recommendations

Hi everyone, my baby frequently gets a lot of infections and bacteria overgrowth because she´s missing the ileo cecal valve. We live at the hospital since she was born (almost 8 months) and the medicine she gets to control the bacteria overgrowth is Cipro. I order to import Oral Cipro 5% because in Brazil we find Cipro just in tablets and Intravenous Infusion.
However, doctors are not sure if she will tolerate the oral antibiotic. Does anyone has got a similar illness? How does doctors treats SBS infections in USA?
What about using the probiotics in babies? What´s the difference between probiotics and prebiotics?
Thank you very much

I just learned that my 11 day old granddaughter is missing her ileo cecal valve and her appendix. She had surgery to connect her intestines. She's on antibiotics because she has a blood infection. Her bowel movements are not normal, she has a tube on her side and one in her mouth. There's lot's of green stuff coming out of her stomach.
I had no idea that such a thing could happen. You may be able to find out the info you need at the hospital where she's at it's www.winniepalmerhospital.com this is a hospital that specializes in women and babies only. This is in the USA, I hope it's helpful to you. If you have any info of what I can expect, I'd gladly appreciate you for sharing it with me. Thank you so much. I hope your baby is doing well.

My daughter is 2 & also has SBS...no ileocecal valve...no fun at all!!! Just a question & precautions about antibiotics & BO...Have they collected the duodenal fluid & sent for culture to find out the specific bacteria they are treating...VIP!!! No need to use unnecessary abx that aren't effective...also encourages resistant species. Here in the US, most docs "cycle" abx...ex.. IV gent through the g-tube for 2 wks, off 1 wk, bactrim for 2 wks, off another, etc... Usually they rotate 3 diff ones to try to discourage resistance. You want to avoid this as much as possible, b/c some species are able to transfer the gene for resistance to other bacteria. They also give an antifungal (nyastatin, fluconozole) to discourage the yeast overgrowth that occurs from the use of antibiotics. From what I understand, if you're giving meds thru a g-tube, it's better to use the pill form (crushed & dissolved) to avoid the sorbitol (is present in most syrups for sugar)...It took me a long time to get our GI on board with this, but eventually agreed....Sorbitol is a BUFFET for bacteria & makes the BO soooo much worse!!! HTH..
Have to run now, but happy 2 help in any way...just let me know!!!!!
