5 Year Old Gagging

0 Recommendations

My daughter was recently diagnosed with Intestinal Pseudo Obstructive Motility Disorder. She just got out of the hospital a week ago tomorrow. She is 5 years old and had to be hospitalized due to an illeus. When they allowed her to start eating she would only eat a few bites and then start gagging and would not eat. She is still doing this. She went to the GI and he has no clue what is causing it and has scheduled her for a Upper GI and Swallow Study. I am concerned and have no clue what could cause this. She is now on 6 cans of pediasure just to keep up her nutrition. Does anyone know what could be causing this and test that need to be run. We will be meeting a new GI on Thursday and I am hoping he has some suggestions. Thanks so much.

Hi, while I do not know what may be causing it, other than maybe she is chronically nauseated, and sometimes even the drs do not know what causes that, I just wanted to let you know I feel so bad for you and your daughter. I will keep you and her in my thoughts that things turn around!

Love,

Lauren

The swallowing study might give you some insight into why she is gagging. It is also possible that she has a hypersensitive gag reflex. Speech Language Pathologists can diagnose and treat swallowing disorders and one should be at the study. Might be something to look into.

I hope that things turn around for her quickly. Hugs and lots of positive thoughts to you both.

I am a 56 year old woman and was born with CIPO. I still gag after I eat or during eating. I was told it was due to the dysplasia that usually goes along with CIPO.

The tests you are having done "should" show what you are looking for. I pray it does.

Once again, I can't imagine watching one of my children suffer as you do. I am sure you feel very helpless. I am sorry for that.

Let us know what you find out. I will be keeping you and your little one in my prayers.

I failed to mention that GP usually also goes along with CIPO...many things do.

I have been told i have pseudo obstruction of small at age 48. I also have gp. i had a 4 day gastric empting scan in 2007 and i still had not emptyed the nucular. I SE dr lipshutz in pa hospital who is top doc in cipo he said most times people are born with it or elderly who are in nursing homes. He told me it is rare to have it at my age there is nothing they can do but when i get throwing up and cant moove my bowls i have to go to the hospital till i canpass my bowls and start keeping things down.It is still in research and not a cure yet i even tried a new medicine called amatiza whithin 4 days i was so full of gas that would not leave my stomach an severe pain went to emergency room and said the medicine was doing the oppisite of what it should of been doing which is normal for me since i am ellergic to so mant medicines so now i start over they have me taking a prep kit to try to clean my insides out and see what happens.i except that what i have can not be fixed unless they come up with a cure. So keep your head up and pray and i hope they find out what your little girl has and take care of it.

Gagging and food getting stuck could be caused by eosinophilia, it can also cause problems with the intestines.
