Liver cirrhosis

0 Recommendations

I've been a stage IV since Jan. '07. I had results back today from my last CT scan. My Onc said I now have liver cirrhosis. My liver has been acting up lately... I've gotten very swollen (swollen abdomen and ankles). It seems like all of this came on rather rather suddenly; I was fine a month ago. Has anyone been told they have cirrhosis in their liver? How is it treated? I am currently on Abraxane(just started). This day has really gotten to me - please help me clear my head. Thanks!

I have not heard of cirrhosis of the liver but I do know that some of the chemo therapies actually attack the liver. Has the ONC ordered an ultra sound to confirm?

You know that we are all here for you --- you are in my prayers and thoughts. ((((((((LR24))))))))

I will follow up on the cirrhosis and see what I can find.

GOD BLESS

Scott

LR24,

What can I do to keep cirrhosis from getting worse?
•Stop drinking alcohol completely.
•Do not take any medications, including those you can buy without a prescription such as vitamins and herbal supplements, without discussing them with your doctor. Cirrhosis makes your liver sensitive to certain medications.
•Get vaccinated against hepatitis A and hepatitis B. These forms of liver disease are preventable. Also, ask your doctor about getting a flu shot and being vaccinated against pneumonia.
•Avoid eating raw oysters or other raw shellfish. Raw shellfish can harbor bacteria (Vibrio vulnificus) that cause severe infections in people with cirrhosis.

List from side effects of abraxane ask your ONC about them to see if this is what is causing the problem!!

The following side effects are common (occurring in greater than 30%) for patients taking Abraxane:

•Low blood counts (your white and red blood cells may temporarily decrease which can put you at increased risk for infection and/or anemia)
•Hair loss
•Nausea
•Abnormal ECG (electrocardiogram)
•Peripheral neuropathy (numbness and tingling of hands and feet)
•Arthralgias and myalgias, pain in the joints and muscles (usually temporary occurring 2-3 days after Abraxane, and resolve within a few days)
•Weakness and fatigue
•Increases in blood tests measuring liver function (these return to normal once treatment is discontinued)

Hope that it helps

Scott

Haven't had this problem yet, but just wanted to hold your had through cyber space while you take a few deep breaths.

I would agree with Scott (hello how are things?) that you need to have a confirmed diagnosis of this, and to be sure that it is not the Abraxane which is causing the problem as it seems to have occured just as you have been put on this medication.

Consider yourself hugged. Vicki xx

Count me in for hugs and whatever other kind of comfort you need during this bump in the road. I, too, have had an amazingly swollen abdomen for a while now...my onc swears it is just fat (good thing I like him), but I have my own theories. You are in my thoughts and prayers!!!!

My wife has been DX OVC III with MTS lever

does chemo make it worse or fix the issue ?
She is on Taxol and Abraxane

Initially there were some black spots via CT.
before this whole thing started.
She had Ascites fluid

Perinoteal ( Perinotial ) OVC also causes these black spots in lever, I heard so

does she needs extensive surgery to remove the portion of lever ?

How you guys handled it..... ???

Her lever exams - Albumin and other lever parameters ( ELT - Extensive lever test ) came fine.....
values normal....

Any suggestions / tips / guidelines ?
