Constipation

They gave me aloxi with my Abraxane. It gave me constipation. In 2002 I used Senakot S. The doc suggested Miralax. Anyone on here have a special remedy?

I've used both Senecot S and Miralax. Both are effective, but I find that the Miralax doesn't work right away - but rather you need to take it every day and eventually it will work, if the constipation isn't too bad. I tried all kinds of things and what ended up working for me was an old one -- Milk of Magnesia!! Everyone has different ones and I'm sure others will respond. Good luck!

I've read other posts that people have used the same stuff you buy before a barium enema. I don't know the name of it, but it seems like one of those "if all else fails" remedies. Maybe someone else will chime in with the name. Good luck!! lisa

I put a small amount of miralax in my morning coffee everyday. I also take a stool sofener daily. I have used other things but miralax has worked the best.

There was a 'poop' discussion on here back in the summer. Can anyone find it? BeachBabe, perhaps?

You can also try slippery elm which can be found at health food stores. It worked for me when I was on chemo last year.

Like Margaret, I think Beachbabe's post on "the straight poop" was the most thorough on the subject. Just use the Find It search engine above. There were some really good suggestions.

Elimination naturally - Try organic coconut oil capsules, calcium and magnesium capsules, or cascara sagrada capsules. You will have several eliminations a day with any of the above remedies and these are not habit forming as is the stuff you find at the drug store. Go to your health food store for these items. Good luck!

I dont know if its purely coincidence or not, but while on Xeloda I ended up in the ER with a major constipation issues. I took 3 stool softeners a day and tried to increase fiber. I stopped chemo 2 weeks ago for a break. Read an article on water therapy. You drink 1.5 litres of boiled, cooled water first thing in the morning and dont eat anything for half an hour. So far I can only drink 5 cups of water, but within 2 days I noticed a difference and my bowels are moving more without the stool softeners. Something to do with the volume of water in your stomach and intenstines, loosens things up and gets them going. Its worth a shot and has no side effects so it wont do you any harm.

Yes, we talked indefinitely about this subject on 'The Straight Poop'. I've had this problem for years, and now with the pain meds I'm on and with a broken tail bone, it's gotten much worse for me. I now take Miralax daily, and also Reglan two times a day. When all else fails, I have a big bowl of ice cream and Alli (the weight loss pill!), that seems to blast it out of me, plus I get to eat ice cream with no guilt ;)

I eat apples. one or two a day and I am regular as anything... and no I am not a vegetarian.

If it is realy bad now, take a colace stool softener in the morning and a peri-colace stool softener with laxative in the evening. If you keep on this regime, you should be fine. Drink as much water as you possible can, which you should be doing anyway, if you are on any chemo. they told me 8 glasses. if all is good, you might be able to just take the dose at night. I have been taking colace for years, because of all the medications I am on. For those occasional stubborn days, use a glycerin suppository and try to go in 30 minutes. It helps to glide things out. Hope this helps!

The one thing that works for me is Lactulose - it is a prescription liquid. A little each day keeps me going along with a fleets suppository.

The easiest thing I have found is eating 3 prunes every other night. They really help and are very good. I get Sunsweet seedless prunes (from California) that are individually package in a plastic container. Try them you will like them. I just got tired of Fiber Con, Colase or Dulcolax. So, no more pills for me.

One other natural method is to take a fresh lemon, squeeze into a cup of warm water, and drink first thing in the morning. Stool softeners become addictive and the muscle in the rectal wall eventually wil not work without using these products. I eat lots of greens, fruits, and drink a half gallon of water a day along with taking calcium, mangnesium tablets, coconut oil tablets and my vitamins. I know some of the meds back up the system so you need to find something that works for your body.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I decided to take one Senokot the night before my chemo and see how things went. I had a bm before I went for chemo and the day after I was a bit crampy, but each time it produced. I've been pretty regular since. My onc suggested Miralax, but since I did not know how I would respond to it, I also asked the nurse the day of chemo and she said either Miralax or Senokot should be fine.
Thanks for helping me "air" this out.
