SINCE I RETIRED 3 YRS AGO THINGS HAD BEEN GOING FAIRLY WELL WITH MY RETIREMENT FUNDS.
BUT IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS I'VE LOST BIG TIME!!!!
SO I DECIDED SINCE THEY "DON'T MAKE HEARSES
WITH LUGGAGE RACKS" I MIGHT AS WELL SPEND AS MUCH AS I WANT. I WAS CAUGHT UP IN THE THOUGHTS OF WHAT IF I DON'T LIVE , WHAT IF I DO LIVE AND ETC, YOU KNOW THE FEELING !! MY WIFE WILL STILL HAVE PLENTY TO LIVE ON PLUS MY PENSION AND INSURANCE.. BUT MY KIDS MIGHT HAVE TO WORK FOR A LIVING...MONEY WAS MADE TO SPEND. JUST THOUGHT I'D PUT THIS IN MY JOURNAL===DON"T TELL MY WIFE SHE MIGHT BEAT ME TO IT...

Gosh Charlie, even Warren Buffett is not leaving it all to his kids. Charlie, you worked hard for it and I think you deserve to spend it on YOU. Please do yourself a big favor and make a list of all the things you would like to spend it on.................then go do it and have tons of fun doing it. Best.........................M.C.

Oh boy, do I ever agree with you!!! I retired three years ago and met with a financial advisor who used that same phrase "There are no luggage racks on hearses" to help me understand that every day I am alive is precious and to be enjoyed as much as possible.

I am in Fairfax County...not too far from you.

I went through that stage too - worry about what I would leave the kids. Hell with them, I'm going on a cruise. LOL of course I took them with me and they both agreed it was the best ever vacation. And I splurged on the extra's; spa treatment, on shore excursions, casino etc. I had wanted to go on one earlier and told my my daughter "it's so hard to plan anything" she said if you don't plan it won't happen. Boom we were on the ship a week later!

Sorry, but I have the opposite view. We can't take memories of a spending spree to the grave either but we can go out of this world with the knowledge we've provided a cushion for our loved ones. That would be my main concern. Of course if your kids have plenty of money then why bother? Perhaps there's a way to make sure the kids get something and still spend enough to have fun. It's your money though so enjoy it in whatever way gives you the most peace.

Boy Charlie I am with you on the retirement fund falling! I am sure there are many others on this site who have the same story! But we ALL have one thing in common - we know what it is like to face something REALLY terrifying - the beast! So while I don't like it that my fund is now about 40% of what it was last January, my major hope is that I will get to spend some of it - no matter how small it is!

Thanks for a great post - it made me smile!!

I WAS JUST KIDDING ABOUT THE KIDS ,THEY ARE 21 & 27 AND I'M MAKING SURE THEY ARE OFF TO A GOOD START . I DON'T KNOW HOW KIDS CAN MAKE
IT WITHOUT HELP THESE DAYS.. BUT I'VE ALWAYS BEEN TIGHT WITH MONEY , AND I HAVE STARTED SPENDING IT ON THINGS THAT I'VE ALWAYS WANTED. MY WIFE HAS BENN DOING THIS FOR YEARS THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT.

I am a financial advisor and after I got diagnosed with Stage IIIA NSCLC last year I decided that, if I lived a year, I would treat my wife to a dream trip to Italy. We were in Italy most of October as the market tanked....When I got back my Doc told me my latest PET/CT scans were perfect. I said, "I guess this means I'll live another year." and he said "This means you may live one or two decades." All of a sudden I'm worried about my bank account again! (Could be worse!)

I've never regretted spending money on things we really wanted....trips, clothes, cars, golf equipment, country club dues, home theatre. I think the ONLY fun money offers is in spending it. I would much rather take a great trip than have more money in the bank for one day when I'm a widow. If I ever run out of money, I'll work harder. Those of us who deal with cancer, all the fear and stress, know that money is not the Uber value.....love is, decency is, kindness.....So, enjoy your money; that's the only thing it's good for. PS As they say, if you don't fly first class, your heirs will.

Charlie, I like your spunk. Hope your wife left you some cash to spend. LOL.
