Fungus in the lungs

Hello my name is Cheryl and I live in NY. I just recently got out the hospital. I was in ICU for 3 days and in the hospital for a total of 6 days.. New Years eve I was coughing up blood.. I though it was because I was coughing so much I open a scar in my lungs and cause it to bleed. Well was I wrong.. I have been diagnose with Sarcoidosis in 2001. When I went to the ER, I was told that my lungs had cavities (holes) and I had pnemonia and a fungus growing in my lungs all due to Sarcoid.. I was told if the bleeding didnt stop they would have to operate and remove that part of the lung.. Thank God it stop.. I look at life so different know.. I try to live it to the fullest!!

Cheryl, I am so glad you are better now. Praise God for the healing!!! This disease can be anything from a minor inconvenience to a VERY SEVERE illness. Most people....including medical personelle....do not understand it at all. Many of my friends think that since I retired from work that I should feel good all the time because I can rest/sleep more. I am blessed that I am feeling better, but not always good!
Again, Praise the Lord for your healing!!! I am glad you are living life to your fullest!!

That sounds just aweful. Aside from coughing up blood, how did your body feel? With fungus on the lungs, does the doctor hear rales when listening to the lungs?

Get back to me if you can.

Wecome Cheryl....Glad you are feeling better. I don't know for sure but on a video by Cleveland Clinic the woman also acquired a fungus infecion so I guess this is not that uncommon. Funny how things in life can seem different when you go through some personal challenges.

As I understand it, once you have bad lung damage, you are prone to fungal infections in the lungs. The lung is a good environment for fungus, so it is sometimes very hard to clear up.

I'm on itraconazole right now for active histoplasmosis that is causing fibrosis, even though the biopsy did not confirm histoplasmosis.

Wow, that was one of the things they tested me for (I lived in a moldy old house) before saying it was Sarcoidosis for sure, the other was TB. I'm glad your feeling better and are out of the hospital. That must have been terrifying.
I have coughed until blood came also, I spent a week on steroids then and it seemed to take care of the problem. Recently I coughed up brown goop, turned out I had trench mouth and it was causing that, so have been on an anti fungal for that. I suck on 5 tablets a day, thank God they don't taste bad. So far it seems to be working. At least now what I cough up is clear.
But this dam disease sucks.

You have my sympathy; in 1978 my father had fungal pneumonia. He was taken into hospital on 17 December and didn't come out until 13 February; his weight plummeted to where he looked like a skeleton with skin and the meds they gave him caused whichever body part the drip was attached to swell up. Eventually they put the drip right into the cavity area. He was a man who always had to be doing something, but he became so apathetic you could tell it was an effort to breath let alone do anything else. Finally they told us they couldn't pump any more into him and it was just up to him. He.too was left with holes in his lung but, as the specialist said, that's why God gave us two. It was a scary time (I was 13) but he survived - thank goodness for medical science and advances!

As a result of the prednisone, I have an active case of cryptocaucus. CT last week showed it is some better after three months of treatment. On the bright side, the sarc is so much better I have started my tapper off pred. Yay!

I also think some of the sarc meds can make you predisposed to fungal infections.....my dad is on 40 mg/day of prednisone for cardiac sarc (right now that's the only place they found it). He is also on a host of other meds. One of the things the Drs. said he HAS to do every day is gargle with an anti-fungal medication. I think it is to prevent fungus in the mouth, but clearly they are concerned about that side effect. The anti-fungal is expensive (even on Medicare)-over $100/month, but it is apparently very important.

Glad you are feeling better . I have Darcoid in my lungs also with a constant cough . I amcough up a lot of crap . For the past couple of weeks I have been sick with whatever is going around . Starting my second round of antibiotics . I swear dr's r crazy . My dr listens to my lungs and sus they are clear. Then I make that horrible wheezing sound for him and ask what's that then? He'd said well u do have a wheeze . Well then howr my lungs clear and I'm coughing up all this crap ? Can't they hear it ??
With Sarcoid we have no immune system so I catch everything . I'm glad u r feeling better . Hopefully you and the rest of our group will have a better new year .

When they did ny broncoscopy to diagnose Sarcoidosis, I was told that the fungal infections are common with sarcoidosis and antibactorial or antibiotics clears it up not sure which it was I was prescribed.

No its an anti fungal. Whole nother beast to worry about. Sigh.

brainfog Of course it was an antifungal.
I am guessing that since our systems are compremized that it is easier for us to inhale fungus spores and have them multiply in our lungs

Yeah along with a whole bunch of other things. Like brain fog, or fingers not attached to brain. LOL All I can say is thank GOD for spell check. (or feet, man the bruises I have on my shins from running into stuff.....)
I hate being sick. I really hate being sick without my Mom or my Hubby to help me.

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I give God all the glory!! I am still recovering, the only mistake I made is going back to work so soon. It is taking a toll on my body, I'm sitting at my desk and I am out of breath. But I used up my sick days.. I am a single women and my bills have to get paid.. I wish there was some kind of disability out there for Sarcoidosis!!!
