I thought freckling just appeared in the armpits and groin areas. But i read a posting that mentioned freckling on the neck. My son has some light freckling on the back of the neck. Could this be related to NF?

Hi Kana,
Freckling in armpit and groin is something they look for for diagnostic purposes. People with NF tend to have more freckles in general (from what I understand). As well, freckles in any skin folds or areas where the sun could not possibly shine are characteristic of NF.
Freckles in a non-NF person are usually a response to sun exposure. The back of the neck is a common area to get sun, so they wouldn't neccessarily be related to NF. My infant son has them in those baby folds of skin at the front of his neck and while not diagnostically significant, the doctors do say that is NF causing it. Other areas would be the inside of the elbow or back of the knee. They definitely seem to show up more in the areas where there are skin folds or joints.
I have the NF freckling on the tops of my feet and ankles.
I've been taught the freckeling in the arm pits and groin area are common with nf because the sun doesn't shine there. So, I would agree the sun shines on the back of the neck; especially those with very short hair. I would look for other characteristics (not sure of spelling, sorry) of nf before I would jump to a diagnosis. I know it's hard when it comes to your children. Good luck!
i have freckles lightly on my neck more on the sides spme appear to look like faded hickes thats what other poeple think they are and again i say to those who know me i always had that watch in two weeeks ,two months and in two years they will still be there nope no hickes freckles.
The only freckles that are diagnostic of NF are the ones that appear in the groin or armpit. That said, clinicians have noticed that NF freckles do sometimes appear in other places like on the neck, or under the breast line in women. We really don't know conclusively why NFers get these freckles in those locations. Aside from an obvious difference in something in the skin, theories have ranged from body temp to moisure levels to salt levels to friction. Some have suggested that friction may be a likely cause for why we sometimes see them under the bra line or around the collar line in some people. And of course not all NFers get the freckling.
I have freckling on my neck too. I also have it along my waistband line. My theory is that it is friction. But who knows? I think we are prone to freckling. Not the sun exposure kind of freckling like some people get.
My neck is also freckled, as well as all the common areas.
I also have a few sprinkled on my stomach, and larger cafe au lait spots throughout my body.
I try try try to stay out of the sun and use SPF 100+ when I am outside.
I went on vaca years back, used a high SPF then switched to a low SPF to get some color....boy did I get it!!! ALL my spots popped out and I was horrified and my cousin was shocked as to how "freckled" I was.
My daugher has the freckling all over her body...legs, arms, neck, back, etc. and all of hers are the cafe au lait spots (as they are called) and are from her NF2. Not sure if this helps. Hers have to be checked because they themselves can become tumors (from what the doctors have told us).
Angelab, This might be a crazy question but are you sure that your daughter has NF2? Having freckling "all over her body" would be more like NF1. NF2 people can have CALS but not usually to the extent that NF1 people do. Also axillary freckling is almost unheard of in NF2. CALS don't become tumors. Sometimes tumors will appear in areas of hyperpigmentation but its not really accurate to say that those turn into tumors. IMHO
