Does anyone who is taking cuprimine have iron deficiency? If so, is there any danger to taking iron suppplements? Any advice would be welcome.
Thanks,
Linda

I have been taking cuprimine since 1987 when I was diagnosed. I have also been taking a multivitamin with iron for almost the same amount of time. I was only 10 at the time so I don't recall the details, but I have been taking it for 22 years and have always understood that the cuprimine takes the good with the bad...it removes the copper, but also reduces the iron, calcium and B6. I have been taking a multi with iron, calcium and B6 (which I replaced with a BComplex) eversince......I have bloodwork every 6 months and I am doing great...
The only thing I remember for sure is that I had a lot of difficulty walking up stairs within the first year of being diagnosed. From what I recall, it was a deficincy caused by cuprimine...the orthopedic surgeon I saw at the time put me on the vitamins etc...my walking improved...and the rest is history.
There are few cases of WD in NL and the doctors following me have not had a lot of exposure to WD so have always been hesitant to answer when I ask if I should still be taking the vitamins and Calcium. I am actually heading out of province to visit a hepatologist in Halifax in July and will be asking that then.
I hope this is somehow helpful...take care...Diana
Hi Diana,
Thanks so much for your reply. I take 50 mg of B6, 1000 mg of Vit D and I try to get my calcium through food. Iron is the new problem. I understand from my reading that iron should be taken 3 hours after the cuprimine as it interfers with cuprimine absorption. Make sure you're getting enough B6. Can you tell me the name of your multivitamin? Glad to hear you're doing well. We are truly lucky!!!
Hi Linda...too funny...we have two discussions going...I am sorry if I am repeating things :-)
Originally back in the 80s I was told to take 25mg of B6, 1000mg of Calcium, and a multi with iron. My combo has changed a little over the years...I now take a BComplex 50 (which has all the Bs), 500mg of Calcium, 1000 Vit D and 1000 Vit C (my own additions) and the multi. Mostly it has been the One a Day brand in the Women's formula. Shopper's Drug Mart has a Life Brand version that is called Daily One I believe...almost the exact same...just cheaper. But recently I have been taking a brand called Progressive - it's vegetable based formula. I discovered it on my own and decided to give it a try. It is more expensive though. I bought two bottles...so I will take them. Might end up going back to One a Day in the end...my old faithful :-)

Sounds like you are well covered. Have you heard of anyone using 300 mg of Palafer for iron deficiency. Sound like a lot to take at one time, doesn't it?
Linda
That does sound like a lot...I guess it depends on the situation? I have just been taking the amount in the multi (I believe it's around 10mg) and have been doing ok with that. I had never heard of Palafer, but I did a search on it when I read your post. According to the Mayo clinic the recommended daily intake in Canada is 8-13mg for an adult female...so 300 seems very high. Is that what was recommended for you?
Yes. It does seem high. I'm going to see a dietician. Let's see what he recommends.
