Cuprimine

Did you know it also quadrupled in price when it did become available? I used to pay areoud $90 a month for 90 tablets...now it's about $380 for the same amount of medication. Ridiculous!

Yes, I was shocked beyond belief. Thank goodness I have coverage. I am thinking about switching to zinc but for some reason my doctor is hesitating. I have been on cuprimine since 1974!!!

Linda...that is a long time...I know my experience is shorter...since '87...but I am guessing you feel the same about it... If it isn't broken...why fix it? I feel so lucky to be as healthy as I am. I just wish the price hadn't increased so much...

I was also thinking about switching to zinc. When the price increased last summer I started in looking for explanations...I called the companies involved and was basically given the run around. I just wanted an explanation for the drastic change in price. The conclusion was that Merck sold the drug to a US company and they increased the price...(a company that I truly believe is a subsidiary of Merck itself). This way the price increase could be blamed on the "other company", therefore no bad PR for Merck. This is just my theory of course...based on a lot of phone calls.

So I started looking for alternatives...I asked my gastro about zinc, but I am her only patient with WD. I could understand her hesitation. She recommended I visit a specialist in Halifax with more WD experience.

It has taken a long time to get my appt, but I am heading to Halifax in July...

Did your doctor give any indication why they are hesitating? Maybe it's just that they have no experience with the zinc and therefore don't trust it as much?

Diana

Diane,

Please share your doctor's comments with me about zinc. I did get my gastroenterologist to reduce my cuprimine from 1000 to 750 mg of cuprimine per day. I think that I will stay on cuprimine as long as I can afford to. It's worked for over 37 years. I'm a little afraid of switching to zinc.
