Insurance denial of hospital stay

0 Recommendations

I just wanted to post that BCBS of GA finally overturned their denial of my last day in the hospital because of a clause in the contract. The clause states that if I used a preferred provider and hospital, they cannot hold me responsible if they disagree about medical neccesity! Finally, almost 9 months after my surgery, this appears to be resolved. I was in the hospital for less than 3 full days for a hysterectomy and a diagnosis of Stage 1c ovarian cancer.

Just thought I'd share this for anyone else who might be battling their insurance company. They denied my first claim and also my first appeal. Finally, after the second appeal they overturned it. Hooray!

Congratulations, and this is good information to know! So far, I haven't had too many problems with BCBS of Ga, but I may have to appeal if they don't agree to give me a PET scan this week! I'm in Atlanta; where are you?

It is ashamed that while you fight a terrible cancer you must also fight insurance companies to pay for your health care. I am thrilled that you won!!!!! Huggs, Teresa

Hi Lifeisgood,

Congratulations on your win in the battle with your insurance company. Many times these companies will deny claims just to see if they can get away with it. When we have to appeal a denial we need to take it to as many steps as there are to prove that we will not back down.

Your situation also needs to be taken up with the new administration as soon as they start working on health care reform. What you had to go through is certainly proof that we need health care reform in a big way in our country! No patient should have to fight their insurance company for coverage for their health care. If an insurance carrier feels that a certain doctor is ordering inappropriate care then that problem should be taken up with that doctor and a solution reached. But the patients should not be included in this kind of situation. It is difficult enough to deal with illness or injury without this fighting for coverage. We need to see that reform is carried out and that this behavior is put to an end. Good luck to you on your care and treatment. Please keep us up to date on how you are doing. God Bless!! Eileen

that is wonderful news. I hope your treatment is going well. Try not to have stress in your life. Easier said than done. However, if you let loose of the stress your health will improve. I am glad the insurance company has been forced to do what they were suppose to do in the first place. God bless.

Thanks for all of your kind words and support. To answer some questions, I am in Los Angeles, CA. Fortunately, my chemo ended in July and I am doing very well. They removed my entire tumor during surgery in February and I was very lucky to have caught it early. I am hopeful that Obama will make the insurance companies accountable for their actions. He went through it himself watching his mother deal with this illness during the last days of her life. God bless all of you in your courageous battle against cancer.
