Hello All,

Have just got my treatment plan. Gemcitibine and Carboplatin being administerd by IV and at a low intermediate dose, whatever that means.

Anyone on this who is doing OK, or has had it in the past, with stage IV NSCLC? Are the side effects tolerable . The UK read up is somewhat miserable. Must admit am really nervous as it all happens on Monday 10-30am have visions of me ripping the 1V out of my arm and running from the ward screaming but then I think of all the innocent children who go through similar treatments and how their little faces always seem to be smiling!

Love to you all.

My wife is nearing the end of her Gem-Carbo treatment
I do not know about the low intermediate bit but it does not sound scary. The side effects my wife has are nausea { it took 5 weeks to get the right combination of drugs} and the usual fatigue. It was not scary although thats easy for me to say. Only time will tell how successful it has been. Keep positive and I hope all goes well.

My husband completed 6 cycles of gemzar/carboplatin with avastin. After 2 cycles had a dramatic response to the cancer and a pet showed no metabolic activity. Completed all 6 cycles with no adverse side effects other than low blood cell counts which were treated with a shot of neulasta for every cycle. Since feb. 08 has been on avastin only for maintanace every 21 days. Keep your head up and try to stay as active as possible. Good luck Kathi

My dad started this same treatment just today. He has qualified for a trial study at the same time. They gave him anti-nausia meds and steroids before starting. I spoke to him about 5 hours after treatment and he was very hungry. Hopefully things will stay this positive. His treatment is for day 1 gemcitobine and carpoplatin and day 8 just gemcitobine. This will be done on a 21 day cycle. Best wishes to you as you.

Hi. I'm not sure if this is the same as my combination. I was on carboplatin and Gemzar. (In the middle we added Avastin which I am still on although I've finished my rounds of the other two). I found this combination easily tolerable. I had some nausea (well treated by Zofran or Emend), some mild fatigue and occasional drops in blood counts which always rebounded. They seemed to work well too as my post-chemo scan showed major shrinkage of the few lesions in my spine and shrinkage of the lung tumors as well. I wish you an easy chemo and good results.

Hi. My husband has been on Carbo/Gemzar for 8 month. In June they had to give him a break. Please read my journal entry "Treatment History". Although the treatment has been successful in slowing the progression of the cancer - the side effects have been dreadful. I wish you an easy time.

Peace, Love & HOPE,
Tina

Kelly D Thank you for your question. I have been told that I will have to start on the same combo next week and I am terrified. I have been on some sort of chemo treatment for 2 years with stable scans during each one, Then pets showed activity after a few months. I have been given the choice by my onc to try this treatment or risk waiting till I have symptoms.
Stage 4 LLLC. Since Feb. 06 without symptoms.Thank you to all that replied. Let us know how your doing.
