34 yrs old with severe osteoporosis

0 Recommendations

I found out a little over 2 yrs ago that I have severe osteoporosis. I have fractured my left arm and shoulder, my C7 Vertebra and broke my #6 rib in half. I have a hard time dealing with it sometimes but I hurt all the time. The doctors told me I can't have anymore children as it would cause alot of damage. Anyone with a similar story.

Wow! Did you fracture everything at once? Do you know what caused your osteoporosis?

and i thought 45 was young! have they told you why you have developed this at such a young age?

i found out about 6 months ago while i was going through yoga teacher training. i broke my 8th right rib, 3rd left then my left shoulder. x-rays showed fractures in the T-7 and T-8 vertebrae. i'd never broken a bone before in my life....this all happened in a period of less than 3 months. so, while i'm not in my 30's, i can still relate to being shocked, angry, sad...

i was so angry and sad (and have my moments still). my life came to a halt...from going 100 mph to 0. i thought my life was just over. i've slowly been crawling out of my hole.

the pain is still intense in my left shoulder and that halts me on much of what i try...but fear of further fracture really holds me back a lot, in pursuing other exercise and even daily chores...but slowly i'm rebuilding a routine and new ways of doing things.

i went through menopause at about 38 so that put an end to children for me...and i was trying to prepare to have a child.

these things are huge disappointments and it takes time to process what's going on. allow yourself reasonable time to grieve...you've experienced a loss and it's ok...but you've taken a great step in joining a support group to help you find solutions and other people that will help you adapt and hopefully thrive in the new life you'll find.

i do believe these things are like beautiful gifts wrapped in ugly packages...they are opportunities to grow in new ways we never considered before. but it takes awhile to find even the little acceptance we need in order to begin to see things this way...

time...patience...acceptance...

you're in the right place and the others here are so supportive with great experience and information...in time you'll find some comforts and maybe even joy.

hang in there...

oh, besides knowing why you've developed osteoporosis so young...what is/are your dexa score/s?
my hip is -2.6 and vertebrae is -3.4

what treatment/s has your doctor put you on?
i had an infusion of reclast in march, started bioidentical HRT last month (with dr.'s guidance)

are you taking supplements?
i take 1,200-1,500mg calcium citrate and 2-3,000iu D3 and a multi with a diet geared towards pain management and bone health.

What are your scores and do the doctors know what caused it. Please let me know. Did you have an accident or something to break all those bones.

I got osteoporosis at the age of 31 during the pregnancy of my daughter. I am now 50. It hasn't been easy. Like you, I have had many severe breaks and have had to be put back together 3 times plus the many other less severe breaks. I have quite an array of titanium in my body. I am not always in pain and i think when your injuries have healed, you can have many years without pain. Make sure you have a good endocrinologist and he/she will help you take the best course for you. i thought i was the only one who got osteoporosis so young. After reading other people's stories on this website, I was shocked at the number of women who were in their twenties who got osteoporosis after pregnancy. Try to read some of the older threads written. You will see you are not alone. Good luck. I wish you well.

I'm 34 years old and since one year ago I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in a very high level.
I have a baby of 1 year old, I was diagnosed when he had 3 months . I have 4 broken vertebras. I have visited 8 different doctors in order to have an answear of why I have Osteo, until january of this year my doctor told that I have a hormon problem and it is the cause of the osteoporosis. Now I'm having an hormon treatment and also taking PROTELOS for the osteoporosis. My doctor will make me another (I don't know how to say in english) densitometria osea to check how my bones are after this treatments and if I have a better results I will continue with PROTELOS otherwise he will recommend me FORTEO.

Flor34-were you breastfeeding? I too fractured whn my first was 3 mos. I'm positive that the estrogen void that exists during nursing your baby along with the toll that breadtfeeding takes on your bones causes osteo (ONLY if you had low bone density to begin with). There are so many of us who have fractured whn our infants were young and we were nursing. I had a second (4 yrs after the first) and we watched my bone density carefully before getting preg, 1 wk after delivery, and 3 mos after delivery. My bone density plumeted between 1 wk post pardom and 3 mos. They made me stop breastfeeding immediately (so sad). I am now on ovcon50 which is birth control, but I'm on it for the estrogen. I'm 35. What I learned after my first is that your bones WILL recover on their own (as long as you are not nursing) and you have estrogen in your blood. I will wait and take forteo years down the road. I want to improve on my own before taking the drugs that have little data for premenopausal women. Best of luck to you! Julie- you are not alone- there are many of us! I'm convinced that in many years, there will be more awareness abt breastfeeding and osteo and maybe they will even check bone densities before pregnancy so that we could have been careful! For now, we continue to baffle the dr's!

Im SO sorry to hear of yet another person suffering from this disease. I too have osteoporosis and i am only 21 years old. I was diagnosed 2 months after my son was born. Its amazing how common it is for women to find out 2-3 months after birth.

I am determined to have more children and the doctors are positive there should be no issues providing i dont breastfeed and i am happy to do that. As much as breastfeeding is important my health is first priority, id prefer to be able to look after my baby.
My osteoporosis caused 6 fractures in my spine and 1 in my rib, so why is it you cant have any more children??

I'm now 58 years old, but I was diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was 35. I had twins at 28 and nursed them. I had a couple of broken bones from falls that no one connected to osteoporosis, mostly because 35 years ago many doctors didn't "believe" in the disease. I have gone throught the treatments as they have become available. My osteo is primarily caused by insufficient acid in my stomach. Not enough acid to make the calcium absorbable in the carbonate form, so I take calcium citrate. There was a period when I hit menopause when my T scores went from -2.7 to -3.4. Those years were painful and I had been on Actonel for 7 years, so I switched to Forteo and the salmon derrived nasal spray (for the pain) for 2 years. I'm also on HRT. I currently am at -2.4 and have no regular bone pain! My first Reclast infusion was last October with no side effects. I feel good right now... no aching bones. I told you all this to emphasize that there are many different causes and they can have a combined effect. You have to use ALL the tools you have to combat this; nutrition, medication and exercise. Keep up with the research and don't loose hope; improvement is possible.

I'm 33 years old and have not had any children yet. I broke both of my baby toes a few weeks apart and told my doctor to check why my bones are breaking. I live in Canada where most of our health care is covered and so the doctor did a BMD which turned up osteoporosis and my scores were -2.5 in hip and -3 in the spine. My doctor put me on 1500mg calcium and 1000iu vitamin D. In Canada there are no premenopausal drugs approved for treatment, and many of the drugs approved elsewhere are not allowed in Canada as well. I read that pregnancy is unadvised, but my clock is ticking. When I asked my doctor about pregnancy concerns he told me not to get pregnant. I am on a waiting list for a specialist now and hope that they will know more.
