Today Is My 24 Year Anniversary

It was the day after Memorial Day in 1987 when I had my first surgery and was diagnosed with IIIc grade 2 epithelial serous ovarian cancer. I was 41 years old and our boys were 9 and 14 years old. I will be 66 on the 4th of July. Brian will be 39 in two weeks and John is 33. I went through a lot and had a recurrence in 1993 but I have needed no treatment since March, 1994. My mission is to give encouragement and hope to my ovarian sisters. I tell people, if I can do it, you can too. I wish there were more stories like mine. Hopefully that will happen not too long from now.

Helen
Dx: May, 1987 IIIc 7 hour surgery and then 8 treatments IV Cisplatin, Cytoxan, Adriamycin over 6 month period
Dec., 1987: second look surgery - IP port put in, no disease seen, many biopsies taken - biopsies came back positve -
still had micorscopic disease - received 5 high dose treatments IP Cisplatin over next 6 months ending 5-88.
May, 1988 - 6 months oral Hexalen to try and prevent a recurrence ending Dec., 1988
March, 1993: Recurrence - cyst found at top of vagina during 3 month checkup. Fluid tested positive - received 12

I am scared and vigilant, worried and fighting... and so on! Your story has made me start looking for the positive today! *I have LOTS of positive days, but today is hard*

Congrats to you - MANY MANY more anniversaries!

Thanks for sharing your hope, Helen! Is congratulations appropriate for a cancer anniversary? If not, how about a simple "Glad you're still here!"
