Hi there....I also have a hh. My symptoms are just pain around the sternum area. I think it's caused by the hh...but I could be wrong.Good luck with the surgery.

I have one but 'haven't had anything done about it. The doc said it was "moderate."
I probably should have it checked out as they say...
Good luck with your surgery - tell us how it went.

Hi Giamarie,

I have a hh also and yes it does cause bloating and gas. Try to stay away from a lot of gas forming foods like...cabbage,broccoli,beans etc... Try not to eat until you are too full because it will make you very uncomfortable b/c hh makes you feel a sense of fullness anyway so eat light meals. It's easier on your digestive system. Good luck

Thank you for replying..I did have a moderate one like you but it got large,If youre not feeling like me,youre probably pretty good!!
And Ill let ya know how I did,Ill be gone for 2 days and probably will be in some discomfort,I found out they cut you in the chest!!v Near your heart, then 2 other places,so I thinking what will I look like, will this be worth it? Due to my nerve damage will still be there.and what will this do for my pain?? Iam worried too about the cuts in the chest..
Thanks for your reply, Bye,Bye for now,GiaMarie'

So thanks a bunch!!

GiaMarie - I also have a HH. I am told mine is very large & we'll just keep watching it - I am totally afraid of surgery! Don't know why - I had some surgery on my spine last year, which relieved a lot of my discomfort in my back & legs. I got over it pretty well, but I hate the thought of anymore surgeries.

I'm sure that your surgery will go well. I didn't know about the cuts in the chest. I thought this is one of those laser surgeries?

I do have gas & bloating, but I eat small, light meals about 4X a day, & take OTC prilosec 2X a day. This seems to help. Plus I stay up for about 2 hrs after last meal, doc says 3 hrs is better, but that is just too long for me.

Best wishes on the surgery, let us know how it goes.

Love & Blessings,

Jan :-)

my hubby has a hh and our primary who 'discovered" it during a routine colonoscopy, doesn't seem to be worried about it, didn't even tell us how big it was.
I do know that when it is acting up, my hubby's side and stomach seem to "pooch out" as he calls it.
The last colonoscopy revealed "spleenic flexion" that our Primary said caused the hh flare up. This was right before hubby was diagnosed with Sarc. We are now thinking that the spleenic flexion was from the sarc. Hope this helps.

I had an hh along with gerd. I had problems swallowing. Through all of the testing they also found moderate hh. To make a long story short, fundoplication was indicated. When they performed the laprascopic fundoplication surgery, they also fixed the hh. The incisions (5 total) were less than an inch long. I assume you will have it repaired using a laproscopy. Recovery time was short (overnight in hospital) and the incisions healed pretty quickly.

Jim98037: What were your symptoms associated with the HH? My Dad has a lot of gas, bloating and burping. He also has some discomfort high in the chest area almost at shoulder level. Did you have similar symptoms with your HH? Please let me know.

I have a large HH. I even saw it on a CT scan going into my chest cavity. I am on Nexium for the rest of my life. I do get trapped gas in the chest often and have to take Alka Seltzer for that. Everything I have read about HH is that surgery does not help. 2 doctors told me this also. I'd like to know more about your surgery.

my boy at 10 had/still has one..

he had a fundo at 4lbs as a baby, and has always had air trapped up in the pocket (on chest xray it looks like a hernia) which he needs venting via Gtube to get it out (have to lay him down and lift his butt up to get the air to move out of the pocket and out the tube.

I had just fed him a feed and he wanted to go on the Disneyland ride that shoots you straight up fast...something happened to his stomach/fundo cause he was in big pain for weeks.

After studies they said he had a true HH and in surgery (to move the migrated Gtube which had grown over to the ribs and to repair the hernia) they found so much scar tissue that the surgeon had to abort and get out after 2 hrs of trying to separate the stomach from the liver and the spleen...he said that stomach was not going anywhere with all the scar tissue.

He still needs venting every 20 mins to empty that pocket as he can swallow air and it goes straight up with no way of burping with the original full wrap nissen fundo from 1992.

I had a 2 1/2 hour surgery recently with no gas problems. I've had severe HH for many years. Finally Nexium seems to keep it pretty well under control - no burning when there is reflux for the most part and only a couple of esophogeal spasm trips to the ER to rule out heart problems. If possible make sure your head is elevated after surgery. Let your surgeon and anesthetist know of your condition.

I had surgery for a hiatial hernia about 5 years ago . I didnt really have a problem with excessive gas bloating with it but did have a very bad problem with acid reflux... I couldnt even bend over with it coming up in my mouth so bad sometimes I would have to throw up... My surgery was a success... My dr said surgery was a gamble as alot of people are not happy with the results.. I am.. I have not had an acid reflux episode since my surgery. They inserted a mesh in me at opening of my stomach... My surgery incisions were very tiny and in stomach area. I did lose approx 45 lbs after my surgery but have now gained it all back plus more. The hardest part of the surgery was being able to swallow solids again and keep them down after the surgery for almost a year. Best of luck !
