Preemie born 30 years ago

I am the mother of a preemie born at 28 wks., 950gm., who dropped to 750 gm. and was sent home weighing 4lbs. He has always exhibited great sensitivity, focus and determination which I think has enabled him to be the great success he is today. Nevertheless it is frightening and uncharted waters for most of us to go through as one always feels the other shoe is ready to drop.

I worked hard to establish a group when he was about 18mo. "Parents of Preemies Support" which did not take off because the local hospital rarely referred us. We were unique nationally and conferred with healthcare providers across the whole country but we were clearly ahead of our time. I had already delivered normally so was critically aware of the differences one feels when your child is born very prematurely. I had begun my academic career focused on becoming a physician and knew how to ask questions but had difficulty getting the practical advice we all desire as Moms. My group provided the kind of sounding board this forum now provides you along with the practicalities such as where to obtain Preemie Pampers which were scarce in my day and patterns for preemie clothes which were non-existent unless you chose to use doll clothes.

The special relationships that I did form with my Preemie Moms last until today so I just want to encourage all of you out there. It is a very different experience for parents of preemies so never be afraid to ask your doctors and nurses questions. Your children will always be special to you because you have shared this experience regardless of outcomes. Best wishes to all!

It is nice to hear stories of older preemies that are doing well:) I think that feeling so misunderstood by the rest of the world is another hardship a preemie parent faces. I think support groups are important to make the parent feel a little less alone. Thanks for sharing and for the support.

We just celebrated our 29 weeker's bar mitzvah this weekend! His full-term brother and his 27 week brother were there dancing the hora alongside of him! There IS light at the end of the tunnel. It just happens to be a very LONG tunnel.

Thanks for the encouragement! It's really nice to hear from a "veteran" preemie mom who has been through many of the trials, joys and challenges we're currently going through! I would like to invite you to please share your wisdom with us as much as possible. Thank you and God bless you!
