Fibromyalgia & Degenerative Disc Disease?

Is it just me or is there a correlation between these two illnesses? I was diagnosed with DDD 3 years before being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I have notice other peoples profiles and posts that mention they have both problems too. I will be speaking with my rheumatologist about this on my next visit. I have severe spine pain 24/7 am on 75mcg/hr fentanyl now and the breakthrough pain sometimes brings tears to my eyes. I have already had a 3 level fusion in my neck and numerous injections and nerve blocks and none of them helped. Had an accutherm on my L4 disc and more injections and nerve blocks there too. Still no help. My lumbar pain runs across my back and down into my right hip and leg. I now have to walk with a cane for short distances as the spasms in my back sometime drive me to my knees. Going from a guy who could work in construction or do mechanic work for 14 hours a day to a man who can barely make it to the mailbox is very depressing and demoralizing. I feel like I am just wasting oxygen sometimes because I can no longer do anything at all due to so much pain.

I'm not sure if there is a direct link between the two or not. When u speak to your doctor will you please post and let me know what they say.I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and then A year later DDD.I'm not completely convinced I have the correct diagnoses.I do have very similar symptoms to yours though. My back pain is unbearable at times even with pain meds.I have nerve damage in both legs and in my right ARM and hand. Please keep me posted if you find anything out and I will see If I can find any info and let you know. Thanks ...Heather

I would also like to hear what your doctor has to say. I was diagnosed with Fibro then a couple of years later DDD of both cervical and lumbar. My cervial DDD has calmed down through the years with cortisone injectons and chiropractic, but it took about 5 years to get to this point. The lumbar DDD is still an issue at times. I did have fusion at L4/L5 and then about a year later finally had the spinal cord stimulator placed. That has helped my lumbar so much, but again it took a while to get there. The Fibro is still a problem.
I will be anxious to see what your doctor has to say about it being connected. Seems there are a lot of us with the same thing.

This is so wild.. I would love to know too as I have both cervical and lumbar DDD. I went off all my meds and except heart .. singulair and protonix .. went all organic no artificial sweeteners or chemicals.... My DDD pain has improved 80% better than with drugs and my CM has not flared in a month..(keeping fingers crossed).

I have the two together. I was diagnosed with Fibro first and the Arthritis second. I also found out I had Hepatitis C around the same time and I have heard that the hep and fibro run together! I wish I knew but I guess it does not matter now!

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2009, now I already knew I have Scoliosis and two of the discs at the base of my neck are almost fused. But based on the pain etc I have been having lately. my Rheumatologist sent me for Xrays and determined I have DDD the report goes as follows. Anterior disc margin hypertrophy is present at L2-3 & L3-4. Mild to moderate disc space narrowing is noticed at L4-5 & L5-S1. The upper portion of the right SI joint is narrowed. Mild narrowing of the upper portion of the left SI joint is suspected.
IMPRESSION- DDD Bilateral mild sacroilitis is suspected. Further evaluation may be helpful. Anyway she sent me for a CT scan yesterday. My Rheumy hasn't mentioned that it is connected to the FM but it is very interesting now you mention that. I will ask her when I go for my follow up. Sorry for all the technical stuff I thought it would be easier if I just printed what the radiologist had typed lol. Thanks for bringing this up..

I forgot to ask CC have you tried medical marijuana? I'm on the Health Canada MM program, it really helps with pain, sleep etc. I saw on your profile about trying to get covered for disability.. I wish you lived in Canada. I applied and got approved first time as do many. it only took 11 weeks from sending the application in to getting approved and my first cheque. I have seen way to many people from the US saying the same thing. loosing or almost loosing everything they have. paying for health care etc. So Sad.
