HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

0 Recommendations

WHEN I WAS DELIVERING MY SECOND CHILD MY BLOOD PRESSURE FIRST WAS NOTICED. NO SURPRISE BOTH PARENTS SUFFERED FROM HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, BUT THE DECEMBER RIGHT AFTER 9/11 I INJURED MY BACK AT WORK AND WAS RUSHED TO THE ER NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE AND MY BP WAS 200/165. AT THAT TIME THE DOC ASKED IF I HAD HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND I TOLD HIM MY DOCTOR HAD PUT ME ON PILLS AND I TOOK MYSELF OFF, HE THEN SAID I WOULD BE ON PILLS AND THAT I DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE. FROM THAT POINT ON I HAVE BEEN TAKING A LOW GRADE PILL. WHEN I CAME BACK TO CALIFORNIA IT WAS 145/90 BUT SOON AFTER CAME DOWN TO 120/80. THEN WHEN I HAD MY HYSTERECTOMY IT WAS RUNNING 105/57. BUT WHEN I HAD MY LAST SURGERY IT WAS BACK UP TO 120/90 AND THE WORKMAN'S COMP DOC SAID I DIDN'T HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND WONDERED WHY I WAS TAKING MEDS FOR THIS YET I HAD A MINOR SURGERY IN NOV AND IT WAS 157/90. I KNOW 145 IS THE HIGH END OF LOW BUT WHAT DOES THE TOP AND BOTTOM NUMBERS MEAN AND WHY DO OTHER DOCTORS WHO DON'T KNOW MY HISTORY WOULD MAKE A DUMB COMMENT THAT I DIDN'T HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE?

145 is high. Not through the roof, but high. Usually pregnancy induced high blood pressure is caused by the extra blood volume in the mother during pregnancy & resets itself to normal after the baby is a few months old. With that... mine didn't either!!!! Pain will shoot it up & keep it there. Its how our body responds to shock. Did the workers comp doctor ever consider that your blood pressure was good because you were taking the medication for it? Worker comp doctors are ofter (not always but mostly) a bunch of rent a doc's that don't have the credentials to be taken into regular practices. They rank right up there on the scale with the disability docs from social security.

Anyone who has HBP needs to have a reg doc and follow up with him every six months so he can keep a true record of your blood pressure and how the medications work over time. Our responses to medications change over time so sometimes meds need to be adjusted. Don't blow it off. Most heart disease starts with HBP.

YOU SAID HEART DISEASE. THE REASON I JOINED WEIGHT WATCHERS AT 48 WAS MY MOTHER HAD STOKES AT 48 . I'VE LEARN THROUGH THE YEARS THAT LIKE IT OR NOT I HAVE TO TAKE MY MEDS. I DO HAVE A REGULAR DOCTOR THAT HAS HELPED TO CONTROL MY BP. THANK YOU FOR THE WORDS ABOUT THE WORKMAN'S COMP DOC'S. THROUGH OUT THIS ORDEAL I HAVE FELT LIKE A PIECE OF MEAT FIGHTING FOR EVERYTHING. IN ANOTHER JOURNAL I SAID I DIDN'T WANT TO BE LIKE MY MOTHER ONLY BECAUSE SHE DIED AT 55 LEAVING ME ALONE AT 11 1/2. I'LL BE 54 THIS MONTH AND I WANT TO LOOSE MY WEIGHT AND BE MORE HEALTHY. THANKS FOR THE WORDS@.....CATHY

You sound like a well informed woman and don't let this doc talk you into ignoring your diagnosis. The reason you don't HAVE HBP now is that you take your meds!
Every day we run around with our blood pressure elevated (even slightly) we are causing small increments of organ damage to our brain, our heart, our eyes, and our kidneys. This doesn't even address the beginnings of possible circulatory issues in our legs - and in reality, our whole bodies!

I'd like to say to that doc, "Shame on YOU for creating a dialog with your patient that negates standard of care in management of HTN!"

Now your job is to find a primary care doc (Family Practice or Internal Medicine or even your GYN) who will help you manage this in the early stages before you have a damaged body!

Lynn

PS: I went back and re-read and sounds like you DO have a primary care doc, so good for you.

I also go to WW, I also lost my mother to a sudden MI at age 55!

I really love the new WW Momentum program. It seems to be addressing many of the non-food related issues that challenge my eating habits!

Good Luck

OH LYNN THANK YOU SO MUCH ! I THOUGHT I WAS KIND OF FUNNY WHEN THE PRE-OP DOCTOR WHO WASN'T THE DOCTOR DOING THE SURGERY SAID YOU DON'T HAVE BP DON'T TAKE YOUR PILL BEFORE SURGERY CAUSE YOUR BP USUALLY DROPS DURING SURGERY. LOL WHEN I HAD MY HYSTERECTOMY A YEAR AGO JULY THEY MADE SURE TO TELL ME TO TAKE IT BEFORE COMING TO THE HOSPITAL. I STOPPED TAKING THIS PILL TWICE AND THE SECOND IT WAS THE HIGHEST IT HAS EVER BEEN SO BAD OR GOOD I WILL CONTINUE TAKING IT AND I'M NOT SURE ABOUT THE NEW WW PROGRAM. I DIDN'T LIKE CORE WHEN IT FIRST CAME ABOUT SO I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS ONE. I'M WEIRD I DON'T HANDLE CHANGE VERY WELL.....CATHY

I have had HBP while I was pregnant with my first child and he will be 16 in May...
I also joined WW....so far lost 9 pounds in 4 weeks...

That is why i'm getting healthy cause i want to be around for mychildren and get off the meds...

Carolyn

ALL RIGHT CAROLYN! WEIGHT WATCERS WILL GET YOU HEALTHY. BEING AROUND FOR OUR KIDS AND GRANDCHILDREN IS THE BEST REASON FOR GETTING HEALTHY AND MOST OF ALL FOR US. I HAD TO EMAIL MY DOCTOR AT KAISER TO GET MY REFILLS FOR MY HBP PILLS BECAUSE WHEN I WENT INTO HER IN OCT. FOR GUESS WHAT A POST SURGERY ANASTHSIA ALLERGIC REACTION FROM MY SHOLDER SURGERY IN AUG AND I FORGOT TO GET IT FROM HER. WELL SHE PUT ME IN MY PLACE NOW SHE WANTS ME TO DO A 12 HOUR FAST FOR BLOOD WORK ON FRIDAY. LOL I THOUGHT SHE WAS MY BUDDY. SHE DID GIVE ME A REFILL TO GET ME THROUGH BUT WITH CONDITIONS. LOL BUT I SO WANT TO BE AROUND FOR MANY YEARS SO UNLIKE THE WORKMAN COMP DOC'S THAT THOUGHT I DIDN'T HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE MY REGULAR DOCTOR KNOWS BEST. BUT C KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND DON'T GIVE UP. I HAVE STARTED OVER SO MANY TIMES BUT GIVNG UP ISN'T AN OPTION!.......WE CAN DO THIS TOGETHER......CATHY

I suggest you purchase a blood pressure monitor and check your blood pressure on a weekly basis. My doctor says he looks for a pattern, not a single pressure. My pressure is lower at home than in the office. Once you have a picture of what your pressure is for several weeks, you have a better basis to discuss this with your physician. Diane

THAT'S A GOOD IDEA DIANE. I HAVE WANTED TO GET FOR THE LONGEST TIME. ..........CATHY
