I am pleased to announce that today we added a new group to Inspire: The National Body Challenge.

We created this group in partnership with Discovery Health. The group focuses on diet and fitness, a subject many of us care about. I invite you to take a look.

Thank you,

People with gastrparesis have a condition that effects how the stomach, small intestines, large intestine empty. Instead of the normal 2-4 hours for the stomach to empty...it may take as many as 24 hours for the little bit of food to empty.(some people have complete paralysis of the stomach and/or intestines) have feeding tubes to bypass the effected area) You would think that with no more food than we take in we would be stick thin but we are also on a great amount of meds that sometimes cause us to gain weight....crazy isn't it? We many times puree our foods, totally skip the palm size piece of meat and 1/4 cup vegie, and plain salad that most weight losers can have. Anything with high fiber is difficult to tolerate, anything with just about any fat slows the digestive process which we really can't imagine. It is a daily struggle to figure out how to get in our nutritional needs. We talk to each other on our boards to get new ideas just to stay alive and well. WE STRUGGLE each day with how to each when the easiest thing would be to avoid food altogether ( which..when I checked on it was not an option..LOL). We don't mean to offend anyone, we just thought this board was for those with GI motility disorders. I think I'll forget about the Discovery National Body Challenge until they get it organized. I wish everyone so much luck and hope you find just the right combination of food and buddy system that helps you. I have lost 90 lbs but it hasn't always been of my choice. I'm still at least 60 lbs from my ideal weight so I know how you all feel. Luv ya all, God bless you too. mama j

What makes you think that I have not done that? I eat as low glycemic as I can, portion control isn't an issue for someone with GP - I can't eat much more than a cup at a time on a normal day anyway, & I've been trying to find an exercise I can do that doesn't aggaravate my symptoms (with mixed success).

Though at the moment it's rather a moot point since I'm back on a liquid diet this week due to extreme abdominal pain & bloating. I'm hoping I can get back to solids soon, but don't know when. When I do, I won't be able to manage much more than 1/2 a cup of something mashed or pureed at a time for a while. Pattern of the condition.

I am sorry I've posted here originally though. I should've just looked, then kept my own counsel & avoided the board. I understand the replies directed to me have been well meaning & are meant to be encouraging (in the "get off your duff" style of encouragement). But they are largely (outside of J-B) just one more non-understanding, kind of discouraging/hurtful, comment from a stranger who doesn't know limitations disease/condition.

Most times I can deal with that okay. This has not been a good week & today is not a good day.

Hi JoAllison, You say that you would love to lose weight. You list food that you cannot eat. What about food that you can & do eat. Make a list & be honest. See if it can be improved on. Everyone has to start somewhere. Good luck.

Help, I have wondered in and out of this discussion "group" that I ... like JoAllison thought was dedicated to the GI Motility Problems. I have found just about everything but what I'm looking for. Those of us with GP and other motility disorders are not the ususal "cut out the calories/exercise type of dieters. We have special nutritional needs... I need to be able to talk with others about our specific needs with trying to loose weight. We cannot do the "regular" stuff to loose our weight! We need a group just for GI motility disorders. Likewise, those who are dealing with osteoporisis need their own group as their needs with boneloss and the danger of breaking bones are totally different than the regular (and I don't say that lightly as I'm an overweight person) overweight person who need buddies to be accountable to and a healthy weight loss diet and sensible exercise. Please HELP !!!!!!!! Get these groups divided or they are of no help to many of us.

I almost never see any group with tips for GAINING weight which has been a problem for just about all of my life (except for the four times that I was pregnant, and shortly after giving birth was back to 98 pounds). Am I the only one that has that problem???

Brian;

This group has just taken over and is smothering all the others. I joined as well but its too much with all the repies etc...plus the replies are in all the other groups I seem to belong to as well. Is there a way of separating things?
Thanks;
Dee

Wow. Reading everyone's entries and I feel right at home. I have just started the night shift this week and am trying to fit working out into my new schedule. It has been difficult. I have not started a food journal yet, but I have been reading it will be helpful. I have added salmon to my diet, and olive oil and nuts. I need encouragement to keep up. I am so tired on this shift, but am hoping it will get better.

hi. i clicked on this group hoping to find a "buddy" - mutual support & encouragement, accountability, etc. i've decided to set small short-term goals for myself - things that are do-able. if i look at the whole picture and all it will take to get where i wanna get, i'm afraid i'd quit before i even start. for today, i am wearing a pedometer, i've re-joined my favorite gym and plan to do strength training and cardio 3-4 times a week. my short term goal is walking 30 minutes a day 3-4 times a week and drinking more than enough water which i began today as well. i really want to change my self and change my life. the best to everyone beginning this journey.

I am so excited! I had not lost all of my weight after having my little one in August 2007, and I am a Liturgical Dancer I have to get in shape to dance. I just joined the challenge a couple of days ago. I have the free pass for BAlly's and will be signing up this weekend. I started running/walking already this week. I just worked out with Gilad on Discovery Channel this morning. I have altered the eating as well. The time is now!! I believe when you set a short term goal you work hard o reach it. My 2 year anniversary is Feb 9, and I am "working" to see a difference.

For those of you that suffer from bone issues, water aerobics is very good on joints and bones-no stress on those areas. Good Luck!!

WE CAN DO IT!! STAY FOCUSED!!! STAY AWAY FROM NEGATIVE PEOPLE!!

Put up pictures they way you would like to see yourself, or pictures of the way you once were and would like to get that back. Keep temptation out of your cabinets and fridge. Out of sight, not in the tummy!

GO! GO! MOVE! MOVE! SMILE! SMILE! YOU ARE GREAT!

I'm going to start by saying, "hello"! I believe you can do anything you set your mind to do. I'm going to try and exercise once a day and quit eating junk food. Good luck everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kristy

i agree with what was said above - first, there are so many entries every day that it takes too long to go through them and 'weed out' the ones i want to read. Having different categories under the main group would be incredibly beneficial! Secondly, I'm in the group of folks who can't do 'normal' exercise because of disease (osteoarthritis and obesity are not a good combination, too much pain in the knees to do a whole lot). Could there be a category for those of us with limited mobility?

I'm glad the group is here, just wish it were a little more user friendly!

Please reconsider attempting any exercises other than what is provided in the NOF Boning Up on Osteoporosis and/or the exercises that the PT's on the osteoporois site have suggested. For those of us with bone loss, we must be very careful with exercise. Most weight loss suggest a "boot camp" exercise mentality. We cannot safely crunch or twist. Please don't jeopardize your bone health. Sandi

hello like to learn more about this site would like to loose some weigth and have support with other people doing the same thing alo have nf1, copo, and other med proples.

I started this on 12/30 and so far so good. I have dropped 1lb and I have been working out every day. each day has a different menu and exercise routine There is also a free one month pass for Bally's which I have been using since day 1. The site is also very imformative. Any way give it a shot I am going to go out on a limb here w/bad pun here, but what have we got to lose (lol). It's free so check it out. Good Luck.

I would love to lose weight, but am reluctant to look at the site because I'm sure that I will only see what I cannot do. I know how a normal person loses weight - everyone knows, it's the doing that that requires support. Eat less simple carbs, fat, and sweets. Eat more veggies, fruit, whole grains, lean protein, and exercise. I have gastroparesis and GERD and hypoglycemia and heelspurs and achilles tendonitis. I can't eat most veggies or fruits or whole grains without extreme pain & bloating, and too much exercise also slows down my stomach, which causes bloating & pain & nausea. I've been trying all last year to find an exercise I can do that my doctor will allow me to do that won't slow up my stomach.

Looking at a site that just tells me to do what I can't - again - would be depressing. I want to look, but I don't want to see more well-meaning impossible advice - I get enough of that from my relatives. (Chronic invisible diseases/conditions seem to increase the acquisition of well-meaning & depressing advice.)

I am trying to drop sugar and to do a short inhome walking DVD I found that isn't yet screwing up my stomach (hoping it doesn't aggravate my foot, but getting weight off would be the best help for the foot overall).

Does this site/board actually take into account that most of us on this site simply can't do what is "normal" to lose weight, or is it someone else who doesn't understand?

Jo

National Body Challenge is a Discovery Channel sponsored weight loss program. It is designed to help people who are overweight to get in shape and start exercising while watching their nutrition. It may be of interest to those who have conditions other than weight, but there is only a limited amount of information in other areas from weight loss and exercise.

Hello hopeandprayers,

You can visit the group using this link:

National Body Challenge Group

Then just click the big Join button to join the group.

Hope that helps,

Walter

Hotchmama raises a great point: different sections for different concerns. Her example of exercise issues for those with osteopenia or osteoporosis. Maybe a section for dieting/exercising partners, a section for journaling/ nutrition, etc.

When i look at the Body Challenge entries, there are too many to read every day. And i know there are entries that would be great for me to read. But working full time, taking care of grandchildren and exercising reduces the online time and the time to read Inspire entries! LOL

Some organization/ sectioning would certainly help me with the new body challenge area. Thanks for the forum to learn and share so many good things!
Mary

Is there a particular section for exercises - body building, etc. - for osteoporosis patients? I didn't see it. Many "regular" exercises are actually detrimental to those of us with brittle, fragile bones. I'm always looking for good sources of the correct kind of exercises. Thanks!

Please tell me more about this group. Do you send us info. or exactly how does it work? Yes, I would be interested I want to do all I can to help my body recover and keep this from returning. Amy
