Left side weakness, Is it from mini strokes?

0 Recommendations

When I had a follow-up with my PCP I questioned her about the subtle weakness that has been getting progressively more noticeable on my left side. I will be seeing a Neurologist on June 8th to find out if I may have been experiencing mini strokes. I really am looking forward to this visit and if I have been having mini strokes, how it relates to my current heart problems.

Hi, I'm so happy you might get some answers. I was convinced I'd had a stroke after my bypass...kept asking my family if they knew and just weren't telling me. But my symptoms were all cognitive (some still present), no one sided weakness. That must be frightening. I had an ultrasound of my carotids a couple of months ago. They were clear, but waiting on the results was torture. Please keep us posted. Blessings, Allie

Thank you Allie I will definitely post any results I get, just in case it could benefit anyone on this site.

Dear 2bx,

If you have plaque in your coronary arteries, you can be almost certain you also have it in other vascular systems of your body, including the brain.

The treatment for TIA's is the same meds/diet/exercise recommendations advised for your heart. If you are doing both aspirin and a blood thinner you might want to ask about that. If an MRI confirms TIA's, you will probably be referred to physical therapy to strengthen up your left side. Other than that, the two conditions go hand-in-hand and are treated no differently.

May the Blessings Be!

I just found your post now and have been wondering how you've been. Any news about your heart and the results of the testing?

I've had 3 srokes (according to an MRI and MRA). They show 2 on the right side of the brain and 1 just left of center (sounds like a driving infraction).
I've learned that strokes cause 'scar tissue'. When electric energy goes through the brain it bumps into the scar tissue and thus causes seizures.

I'm now on anti-seizure meds (Lamictil). The TIA activity is a mini stroke, as you know. The seizures I've had are like TIA's or Strokes.

Yes, they have caused minimal effects in the left arm. But, after one severe episode, I could not type on this computer without serious mistakes in hitting the keys.

There have been no seizures since January, 2007. For which I am thankful. Neurologist put me on KEPRA at first. But, it plunged me into deep depression. My wife did now know me. IT was pretty serious. They took me off KEPRA and slowly the depression left.

I've also learned there is a difference between "weakness" and "numbness".

I do have a problem with too fast of excnage in conversations. I get frustrated and cannot repond well during a "rapid conversation". I need time to think. Otherwise, my speech is slow and cannot think what to say ----at times.

Thank you for your input, I look forward to finding out what has been going on with my left side. I have experienced both numbness and weakness to the point that I have problems gripping or holding things with my left hand.

Hi again. What did doc say this time? I worry about you with the heart problem. Today's the 9th of July, so that means that you went yesterday.
